So we talk about recruiting and obsess about rankings, but I've been curious lately as to the recent correlation of success in the recruiting rankings to success on the field. Now, I know this has been done before, but the following is focused on our neighborhood, namely the six traditional SEC powers, UT, UF, UGA, BAMA, LSU and AUB and the last 10 years.
The way to read the following is obviously the pertinent year first, then the recruiting rankings for the senior class, junior class, sophomore class and then freshman class, followed by the team's record and the final AP ranking. All of the recruiting rankings are from the composite. The "2020" numbers put the current rankings in the composite as of today as the "freshman class" ranking for next year, it won't be exact of course for where everyone finishes after signing day, but it'll be close.
A couple of things that jump at me, aren't revolutionary in any sense, first, recruiting rankings do NOT dictate destiny, but their cumulative effect generally results in better cumulative results on the field over time. The quarterback position has an outsized role in on the field success, and it is absolutely no mystery at all, how Bama sustained its dynasty. I'm interesting in hearing what anybody else more insightful than I am sees.
