seems like we are beating South Florida and other lower tiered programs in our new recruits. Alex Williams said he was dying to get a FSU offer but did not. Does this say anything about where we are this year?? I fully expect things to get back to being a top 10 recruiting team in a couple years.....what does everyone else think??

South Florida was ranked #2 in the nation next year. They're on their way. If we want a kid bad enough, it shouldn't matter who we're competing against for their services.

I really think that this year will be setting the stage for bigger and better things. Kiffin is getting his name out there and meeting all he can, but without a full staff or a ttrack record to display on offense or defense, he can be out flanked by many other coaches who could call in to question what he will do.

He's letting go highly recruited players like Boyd. Kiffin knows what he wants and doesn't care who offers who.

This is somewhat off subject, but how in the HE11 did they recruit before the internet and youtube?! Word of mouth and sending a reel-to-reel in? Pony express and morse code? I seriously cannot fathom how difficult that would have been.

Obviously CPF didn't hear of this internet thing:p

I wish that CLK would give us his plan, because that's basically something we really didn't have in the past decade with CPF. The past decade we went away from being a run 1st, pass 2nd team, to a pass 1st then punt.

I agree with Brier, Kiffin is paving the road to knoxville, so that he can snag players from the 8 surrounding states and the rest of the country.

CPF last few recruiting classes were rated fairly high, the best of which is Eric Berry. The problem is we were not recruiting 4 and 5 * OL and DL. Signing great LB's, DB's, and WR's will not win the SEC. You need stud Linemen on both sides of the ball and a solid QB. I realize that you don't find a Peyton Manning every year but we haven't had a great qb in a while. We were playing Rick Clausen at one point over Ainge. What happened to recruiting the John Henderson's and Albert Haynesworth's? I hope Coach Kiff will realize that.

I looked at the rivals board and just about every DT was already committed somewhere. We need a couple more tackles in this class. Hopefully monte can real one or two in before NSD. O-line could use some more beef also. A whole class of linemen would hurt my feelings.

Coaches look at what will fit what they do, and what they need.
Rivals and Scout do not play a part in who any good coach recruits. Those sources are for the fans, and have been proven to be wrong both ways. It is no different than what Mel Kiper does with the draft, take it with a grain of salt. If they could figure out a ranking for a coach filling his needs with the most quality players, then you could have a quality gage on a recruiting class.

Recruiting reminds me a lot of Herb Brooks' comment to his assistant coach Craig Patrick as he was selecting the USA hockey team that he was going to take to Lake Placid to win the gold in '80...

"I'm not necessarily looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right ones."

CLK has a plan, and part of that plan is getting the best players he can possibly get to come to The Hill. However, another part of that plan is getting the right ones to fit into his system. I know CLK is unproven as a coach, but one facet he is proven in is his ability to recruit.

So my thoughts on recruiting thus far is he is doing a good job. He has kept the turnover to a minimum, his and his father's name alone has put us in the race with some, and has gotten us some commits from "out in left field" per se.

Agreed, You have to have great players to compete with the elite in college football. Sometimes they are good when they get somewhere, and great when they leave.

Some of the highest rated players do not fit in certain programs. Players Star ratings give us something to talk about.
