Just wondering what everyone thinks of our chances of getting a decent recruiting class this year. I was just on ESPN's recruiting site and it's not looking that great right now. The scarier thing is that Georgia's class already looks incredible and we know that South Carolina's is about to pick up quickly. Can we rebound with a smart hire on OC? Thoughts?

TN always starts slow because we don't have much in-state talent. We always close well once the season is over and the national recruits start narrowing it down. I wouldn't worry yet.

My bet would be that we would have a good class.

I don't think the Vols will be outside the top 10 in the country in recruiting. We'll drop some, but we'd have to have more than one bad season to really drop off.

I think we'll do better than most people think. We'll still have Fulmer and Chavis which means stability and predictability. Recruits don't have to worry about new systems and shocks.

I think the attitude will be better with recruits since Fulmer is moving away from the seniority system. he used to only play upperclassmen. He's opened up to giving the new kids a chance more than he used to. This means there's a better chance to play and outshine those who have been here for a few years.

We can all speculate but I'd like to think that the negatives aren't outweighing the positives even now.

Without turning this into a qb thread, does anyone know of any good prospects out there that may still consider UT? It seems like that could be a shallow area for us unless serious development takes place (which I think could happen) Just curious...

No. They are looking at some combo-style QBs according to Brent Hubbs. The ones that can play other positions, perhaps.

But don't bet on it.

Why don't we get the JUCO studs like we used to?

If we go after a QB the last thing he will want to hear is "what do you think about playing another position?"

Schaeffer, Leak and Banks weren't too keen on that. Notice a pattern with these three...they were considered mobile QBs.

I honestly don't think Fulmer & Co. know how to handle QBs who can move. They fear these guys and really don't know how to work with them. And no one wants to come here seeing this sort of track record. I know if I was a Vince Young or Marcus Vick type, I'd look somewhere else before committing to UT.

That's a good post. One horrible season shouldn't hurt chances of landing the big fish. We can always use the "If you were making the plays" routine.

I hope that's true but I just saw where Mclendon(sp?) is now looking around again.

I know Crompton had a major hand in getting a lot of the top talent we got last year to come to Knoxville. Maybe the coaches noticed that and made him host for all visiting recruits. I dunno what he says to these guys, but once he's had their ear, they want to be a Vol.

True you are correct Fulmer can't probably handle that type of Q.B. but Cutt can for sure...Example...Tee martain

You can't tell about recruiting after a bad year. Houston Nutt signs Mcfadden after a mediocre year last year. the best I can tell we need some playmakers at certain spots (WR, safety Etc.)

Frankly, I wouldn't want V Young. He is having a good year, but it took him three bad ones to have this -- and a crappy Big 12. Against OSU I thought he looked mediocre.

Marcus Vick is pretty good but he got exposed against Miami. He went 1-10 in the 1st half with one INT.

I'd rather have Leinart, 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. If you can find me a Leinart that can run, then we'll talk.

we've brought in a bunch of big athletic tight ends. hopefully with cut coming in, he's incorporate the tight ends more. like that one guy who's 6'7. and we've still got some good prospects that are top 50 recievers in the nation who are looking highly at tennessee. also, keep Walter Fischer in your thoughts. big time linebacker from a san francisco community college. you watch, you two faced critiques, we'll be be doing just fine with recruiting. (when i say two faced, i'm talking to all you "fans" who are cheering for 'ole rocky top when the times are good, but when we stumble, they are the first ones to say they knew it all along.)

Gotta say I'm a little bit concerned at this point that we have so few commits versus a lot of other teams. We'll just have to wait and see. I guess.

And, by the way, we still have all those butt kickers we picked up last year, so some of them will be coming on next year!

Just keep an eye on my man, Demo in that defensive backfield...future All-American, guaranteed! And Arian, well, I say Heisman before he's through!

I am solidly in the complainer camp right now. I think the thing that pushed me into being a hater of sorts was the fact that I had no idea this was coming. I still have my Athalon preview with Gerald Riggs on the cover and UT as preseason #3. All I can do is ask myself wtf happened?

I think it depends on the kid...no doubt recruiting the SEC has gotten much harder with the big name coaches in the league now, and then with the ACC adding VT, MIA, and BC, that conf. all the sudden is a powerhouse....

UT has always had to rely on national talent base, so that's nothing new, but it is becoming increasingly harder to pull kids out of states like SC, NC, VA, FL, TX...etc...

But you could look at UT's woes this year a couple of ways...1. man that team is on the down hill, coaches quiting, fans pissed, attendance dropped off, no bowl...not for me...or 2. Look at all the opportunity there is at a program like Tennessee...if i go to UGA, i may have to wait to be a Jr. before i see the feild, at UT, i could play WR now...

Obviously, option 2 is part of what we'll sell, along with all the NFL players we've put out, conf. championships, NC, on TV all the time etc, etc,....

I think we'll take a hit or two, but come Feb. we'll finish pretty strong....i'd say top 15 or 20 class...and you add that to last year's crop, and you'd like to think that even if next year is a bit of a struggle (which i think it will be), it should turn around for us pretty good in 07...
