Just days after its 2022 season ended with a win against Clemson in the Orange Bowl, Tennessee has had a player enter the NCAA transfer portal. Reserve offensive lineman William Parker entered the database on Tuesday morning, a source told GoVols247. The 6-foot-5, 310-pounder out of Nashville just finished his redshirt freshman season and played in two games in 2022 for the Vols.

Opportunity for Umarov?

Tennessee loses a tackle body with the Parker announcement, along with Darnell Wright who is going to the NFL. Glen Elarbee still has some options at tackle with the return of Gerald Mincey, Jeremiah Crawford and reserve Dayne Davis – plus more underclassmen. The Vols welcomed four-star 2023 offensive tackle commit Shamurad Umarov on Signing Day.

Hard to ever know these situations, but if he was losing ground to the 22 and 23 kids that are all basically less that a year into the program, he may have second thoughts. It stinks. Thought he had potential to keep growing and compete in years 4 and 5 of his tenure, but kids want to play.

All speculation on my part. I have no inside info and wish the best.

Please enlighten me Greg. What was his problem ?

I'm not implying any behavior or attitude problems, just word from those in the know that he wasn't really making any noise to move up the depth chart and it doesn't look like he fits into future plans. Same may be true of Perry, although Perry did get on the field more in blowouts.

It happens. Players get recruited over by incoming players all of the time.

He most likely didn't see much playing time for himself and wanted to go somewhere else.

I would just say thank you for your time and I hope it works out for you somewhere else.

I hope these kids realize how rare it is for an underclassman OL to play well in the SEC. Even Darnell Wright, who's projected as a 2nd round draft pick, didn't look great until his Junior season. Look at how far Cooper Mays and Jeremiah Crawford have come in the past two years. Javontez Spraggins is another example - limited action as a Freshman, started as a Sophomore but didn't set the world on fire, then as a Junior in 2022 he was an absolute BEAST.

If these young guys know what's best for them they'll keep grinding and BUILD STRENGTH until it's their time to shine, most likely as a junior or senior.

Just the sign of the times............................everyone not only wants a participation trophy , however, think they are an immediate starter , as a freshman. Pampered kids want the unexpected favoritism , without having to earn it. It is simply a generational issue of the day ! Strictly my opinion ! THEY FEEL THEY DESERVE EVERYTHING, AND THERE IS NO REASON TO EARN ANYTHING.

Exactly, he is just looking at the depth chart and looking at TN bring in a bunch of new tackles via the portal and HS recruiting and reading the writing on the wall.

Wasn't he the one that felt compelled to pour the Gatorade on Heupel after the bowl game? It should be a requirement that you're satisfied with your station if you engage in that specific act.

Kid wants to play, and he isnt likely to do so here. Cant fault him in this era when transferring is so available.

Best of luck to him.

Look another quitter! Instead of grinding to improve, “I’m taking my ball and going elsewhere.” SMH!
Just wondering not really directed at you, just curious how many of these kids were encouraged to look around? You have to think the staff has had some dialogue about where they are on the depth chart and their chances of moving up.

Kind of what I’m thinking too. Looked like he was never going to be a factor here. I hear the “quitting” argument but I don’t see it that way especially after conclusion of the season. Sometimes you have to have honest evaluation of your abilities to contribute.

Yep, he can go to MTSU, Memphis or a bottom half ACC or Big 10 school and probably start or get into the rotation.
