This question has been kicked about more than Iowa's football team.
As I stated I never saw a definitive answer to the question. I've always believed he would have a redshirt available but all I've seen is responses like yours.

Nico played in 4 regular season games. The bowl game does not count. If Nico wants to redshirt he can if not he will be a sophomore
