I was wondering how you get a referral. I have two of them.

i've always wondered about those as well. I don't have any and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

i think i read somewhere in a thread about getting these for getting a new member to come to the site or something along those lines.

Yeah. On the signup page there is a place for them to put who told them about the site.

Referrals aren't really used on here.
