I go to a few a games each year, and it always amazes me how like half the crowd is in the 65-80 range. Has anyone else noticed this? Why do elderly people like women's bball so much? I was watching the selection special, and I noticed other teams have a similar audience demographic.

Regardless of the reason I thinks its fantastic to have so many senior supporters.

I haven't noticed it that one sided. Ever notice all the old people at NFL, NBA, college football and college men's basketball games? I do.

I believe that the proportion of older and elderly people in a given women's bball crowd is much more dramatic than in a given men's bball game. In other words, I see alot of permed gray hair in the crowd

I think you are right about the demographics. In particular you won't find so many older women at other types of sporting events.

But women's basketball has always been more family oriented and when they were building the game they made everyone feel welcome. Where else are you going to find so many gay women rubbing elbows with grannies? Lots of young guys and kids as well. Pretty diverse group actually.

The women play a style of basketball the old timers are use to from their youth. The men's game is all above the rim. Bigger, more powerful players. Years ago almost none of the men could/would dunk. Makes me wonder what is going to happen as these oldsters start to die off. Same problem with banjo players.

And, yes, it's a cheap night out.

Whoever mentioned the "family night out thing" might be closer to the reason. I don't really know. I enjoy watching just about all UT sports. I get as much out of watching the women's basketball games as I do the men's.

Yeah, it's fun to remember the old days of peach baskets, granny free throws, and then a taffy pull post game..lol

Back in the day, about the only sport for girls in school was basketball. Some schools, if they were lucky had a few other sports available for them. I bet a lot of the ladies in the crowd played a bit of BB in their day at school. So, they are very fond of the game and love to watch it.

A lot of the older crowd just didnÂ’t show up one day at the games either. The same people have been going to these games for decades. The games are special because they are so good and cheap to go to. The program has nice tradition as well. There is a lot of orange blood that flows through those seats in the TBA when the LVs play there and a lot of it also follows them around when they are playing on the road. These fans love their Lady Vols.

Just in my opinion, here's why the older generation likes the women game more than the men:

1). No tattoos
2). No one-and-done prima dona's
3). No showboating.
4). Better team play.
5). Other than an abundant of missed layups, the women appear stronger on the fundamentals of the game.
6). Tickets are cheaper.
7). Women seem to appreciate fans more, even if they do sit a lot.
8). In the case of Tennessee, I've seen both the men and women play quite a bit this year. The women have had only few games where they've stunk it up. The men have had only a few games where they didn't stink it up. Watching competitive games is much more fun.

Yeah oUTraged, I agree with your list too. The women's team was a lot more exciting to watch than the men's team this year because they were more competitive.

I have it on good authority that there are more where they came from.

It is the circle of life... hakuna matata bro... no worries.
Yes, but the "new" oldsters won't have the same attitude about basketball. They will be use to the "new" men's game and shun the women's game - just like the banjo, although you reminded me, the ukulele is making a comeback with the young.

1.The women are catching up rapidly in the tatoo dept.
8. No the LVs don't stink it up often, but their opponents do. That's not good for women's basketball. Parity is getting better however. That's not good for LV basketball. The days of domination are probably over. Schools with better academics, more beautiful campuses, better location, better facilities, etc. will gain at the expense of schools that don't have these things. It's hard to compete against Stanford, except you have to have a brain to get accepted. I do think they make exceptions for athletes these days.
It's a shame that football runs everything, but that probably helps Tennessee, but not as much as it use to.

The real question is, why do so many of the younger fans-students don't come to the games?

You have to remember those of us over 60 were borm in the, late 30's, late 40's and early 50's. We saw a lot of sports in the 60's and 70's. How many at the games/races are in the age range of 25-45?

Just for the record, I don't think 65 is "elderly". Not sure why I said that in op

They are preoccupied with IPhones and IPads. They are even on them in class. However, some may be watching the LV games that way. Nevertheless, the games are better when you go to them in person, like it is better to listen to the profs in class instead of waiting for the power point presentations.
