are there any individuals on here that enjoy reggae? let me clarify, not just bob marley, but the broader umbrella of reggae music. i have my fair share of bob albums, but i do not consider bob as the only reggae artist in my collection. i am a HUGE reggae fan and if anyone wants to chat it up, that would be awesome. i know that this may not be what some people like, and that is fine, but if there are some people on here who really do like reggae than we should talk.

I like it but don't have a large collection. I do have/have had:

Jimmy Cliff
Black Uhuru
Burning Spear

I also like Hepcat which is probably more ska than reggae but good stuff none-the-less

I have a bunch of reggae on vynil, which I have been intending to digitize when I have free time. Maybe over the Holidays this year? I have my share of reggae in my collection but the closest thing I have been listening to lately is Desmond Decker and The Specials. As b-ham posted, more ska than reggae.

Back in the day (early-mid 80's) the UT student radio station had a DJ Friday afternoons that was from Jamaica - he had some awesome stuff, the accent and the whole shebangabang. I think he was a Chemistry TA too!

In the early-mid 90's, there was a place in Nashville on West End Ave (about a block or so from Tower Records), there was a place that had a group perform there called Mystic Vibrations (I think). Pretty decent music at this place. Also was a band that traveled throughout the East Coast (can't remember that band's name ) that played a lot in Columbia, S.C during the same time period and played live shows in Five Points.

Live reggae is 10X's better than anything on record. The baselines and the drums... nothing like it.

totally agree with all you guys. I just moved back from leadville, CO and caught a ton of shows. I have listened to all types of music in the past and have really devoted the last 5 or so years to just digging up as much as i can from artists all over the world. the collection goes back to joe higgs. mystic vibration i want to say released an album several years ago, but i don't think they have done much outside of small venues in a long time. steel pulse is by far the greatest show i have ever witnessed. i can go on and on, but i am glad to see some of you enjoy it. if anyone is interested in some of the newer stuff that is really good, just let me know. needless to say i am really passionate about the music and like rasputin said it is all about the live experience.

i have really been following the nazarenes here lately. they have a few really good tracks and if you jump on their myspace they have some good ones posted. you can never go wrong with midnite. they are out of the virgin islands and i have probably close to 15 albums of theirs. but seriously if any of you guys want to chat it up send me a message sometime. i have just recently moved back to chattanooga and am still trying to discover the true reggae venues around here. not much happening in chattown except for milele roots, yawn. they are a jam band anyways.

nice link, i will check into it. but i am surprised there have been no mentions of the gladiators, dennis miller, bunny wailer, clinton fearon, sizzla, anthony b, morgan heritage, capleton, the abyssinians, alpha blondy, aswad, barrington levy, beres hammond, black roots, the congos, culture, junior kelly, luciano, third world, turbulence, or even the twinkle brothers; just to a name a few (there are many more). if you guys don't have any clinton fearon, you should look him up. he is clinton "bassie" fearon from the gladiators and has done some really wonderful solo work with a few of his albums being absolute masterpieces.

You guys know of any good reggae clubs in Nashville metro????

Not really. The EXIT-IN always used to have a great show on Marley's birthday but that seems to have gone by the wayside with new ownership in recent years. I'm guessing that it's just the odd show here and there at this point.

i just got the latest lutan fyah album in the mail yesterday and it is pretty sweet. if any of you all know about this guy he is on his way to being at the tops of the genre. his latest album is Lutan Fyah- Africa. not all of the tracks are that great but being a 2 cd release there are actually quite a few really great tracks. the first cd is just spectacular and worth checking out.

i just thought i would share some new album titles worth checking out. i may be talking to myself, but maybe someone will find them interesting to check out. i know i must be in the smallest of minorities in terms of musical tastes on this board. so here goes:

Anthony B.- Rise Up
Benaissa- Tables Turn
Daweh Congo- Ghetto Skyline
Fanton Mojah- Stronger

If anyone wants some intel on each of these I would be more than happy to share some thoughts. The Daweh Congo album just came in the mail today so I am actually spinning it for the first time right now and am very pleased thus far. There are some good releases that should be on their way in the near future.
