REI Closing on Black Friday

BF shoppers and profits were down last year. I don't think REI is exactly the most popular spot on BF, so good move to grab headlines now. Hope the hourly workers still get their hours or pay for the week.

I've always enjoyed going to the mountains on BF. I see REI is trying to ruin that. I mean, it's already bad enough.

They've said their employees will get a paid day's leave.

It was still one of their biggest sales days. I like the idea though.

People shop at Mom-and-Pop stores, which are closed every Thanksgiving weekend.
People, instead, go to big store Thanksgiving weekend because Mom-and-Pop closes.
Mom-and-Pop goes out of business because they don't have the buying power of big store, and they're not as convenient.

Big store has "groundbreaking idea" to close the Friday after Thanksgiving.

I "shop" on BF, but only online. lots of deals to be had, and there's no way I'm going to stores and all their craziness

Even better, I quit Christmas shopping except for my mom. Wife and I agreed to quit and the rest of my family just has a dinner and makes a charitable donation somewhere instead.

Good for them. We've never done the BF thing. We do our Christmas shopping throughout the year.

I did it two years ago when we went to thanksgiving in dallas. Kevin's mom was saying she wanted boots when I was looking at the ads in the paper. I jokingly said belks has them for $19 and they open at midnight! Okay let's go! We thought we could just get there right before opening, it is Belk, and we saw a very long line. I failed to read the giftcard give away for the first so many people in line. Kevin and his mom said let's go home and I said we are here! Got in line, the ladies behind us were hilarious, made the time go by. There was mass chaos around the boots, but it was a memorable funny time that we still talk about! Otherwise I just don't go.

I have gone this way with my siblings and close relatives, we all get together sometime after New Years when things aren't so busy and have a nice evening with company.

Wish the old lady would give up Christmas shopping so I could avoid it totally, but that's not happening.

"Black Friday historically is the most important retail day of the year," he says. "It's like a national holiday."

sad they moved Thanksgiving day so people can do more shopping

We had been doing adults on both sides draw each other's names and kids do the same the last 6-7 years. I opted us out of my family this year. Wife is supposed to do the same but I don't think she has yet.

As for BF I've never been involved. Wife and sister in law used to go but stopped a few years back. I really don't have much of an opinion on the whole thing. There are deals to be had and if you are willing to put up with the crowd then good for you. I'd rather stay home and watch CFB.

Nice for the workers and families. Now they can go shopping too. :)

Surprised that they're going offline though. Let your system do the job and start fulfillment when you come back.

We usually just stay home and watch CFB on Black Friday. Then again we Christmas shop all year.
