We're four weeks in, and coming off a bye we've had a chance to sit back and focus on other teams we have left on our schedule, and I thought I'd take a minute to analyze them now that we have had a chance to see a little bit more of what they're capable of. Also, I'll take this as a chance to include a little bit of a W-L prediction. I understand most teams aren't in the meat of their schedule, but so far it seems we have some good ideas of what we'll be facing.
Georgia: 2-1
Clemson: W 45-21
USC: L 38-35
Troy: W 66-0
One of the best teams left that we face this year. If we can stop Gurley, we can force Mason to beat us through the air and I like the idea of that matchup for us. I think we can win this game if we execute well and develop a running game. However, the realist in me doesn't see it. Probably a loss, but who knows.
Florida: 2-1
E Michigan: W 65-0
Kentucky: W 36-30 3OT
Alabama: L 42-21
Winnable, but not anywhere close to a gimme. The Florida defense will test us, but how well our offense plays really determines this game I think. After the UK and Bama games, it's safe to say they are talented on defense but very vulnerable if exploited. See, 645 yards offense given up versus Alabama and being taken to the wire by UK, who I think is improved but not yet completely SEC ready. We can definitely win this game.
Chattanooga: 1-2
Central Michigan: L 20-16
Jacksonville State: L 26-23 OT
Austin Peay: W 42-6
With their only win currently coming versus AP, it's safe to say this game will see our younger players and backups getting a lot of time. If we lose this game, fahr Butch posts would be entirely acceptable. We win handily.
Ole Miss: 3-0
Boise State: W 35-13
Vandy: W 41-3
LA Lafayette: W 56-14
They are looking the part so far. Bo Wallace's stats after the first half of the BSU game are great. After that first half he is 58-72 passing (80.5 %) for 857 with 8TDs and 1 int. If good Bo shows up, we lose especially with their defense looking good so far. If bad Bo shows up, we can win this game.
Alabama: 4-0
WVU: W 33-23
FAU: W 41-0
SMU: W 52-12
Florida: W 42-21
While Florida is still rather suspect, the win over WVU shouldn't be overlooked now that we've seen them nearly beat Oklahoma, who beat us. Although I still don't think they're tested enough, Bama will probably beat us by two or three scores. I just don't think we're ready unless Worley has time to throw and torches their secondary, or one of Hurd/Lane has a career game. Probably a loss.
South Carolina: 3-1
Texas A&M: L 52-28
ECU: W 33-23
UGA: W 38-35
Vandy: W 48-34
This game is interesting because I still can't read USC. They get blown out by A&M, struggle against ECU who is now ranked, barely beat UGA, then seemingly struggle versus Vandy. This team seems to be hot or cold from week to week. Two of Vandy's touchdowns came from returns and ECU is very good, but the UGA win was questionable and the A&M beating was absolute. We can win this game with solid play all around. If Vandy almost can, why not us?
Bye Week 2: 0-0
So far the bye week has yet to show us what it's made of. If we beat UGA this weekend, we deal the bye week a heavy blow as it didn't allow us to get lazy and complacent. Jones has a good history versus the bye week by winning or playing well right after it. This one comes at a good time right before a final three games that could become must wins for a bowl game.
Kentucky: 2-1
UT Martin: W 59-14
Ohio: W 20-3
Florida: L 36-30 3OT
Is UK that good? Is Florida that bad? Well, UK looks improved and it seems they caught UF sleeping. Just when you think UK is that improved, UF turns around the next week and gives up a record 645 yards of offense to Bama. Yes it's Bama, but UF is supposed to have a stout defense. My takeway, we can win against UK with solid defense. It may no longer be a gimme, but it's probably a win.
Missouri: 3-1
SDSU: W 38-18
Toledo: W 49-24
UCF: W 38-10
Indiana: L 31-27
Well, it's happened. Either Mizzou overlooked Indiana, or they've been exposed. A solid win over an FCS team, a solid win over Toledo, beating UCF who just lost their NFL caliber QB, and dropping the ball to Indiana who lost to Bowling Green. Whether they fell for the trap game right before South Carolina or have been exposed remains to be seen, but they look beatable now more than ever.
Vanderbilt: 1-3
Temple: L 37-7
Ole Miss: L 41-3
Umass: W 34-31
South Carolina: L 48-34
Vandy has looked like the most beatable SEC team this year. The blowout loss to Temple. then a blowout loss to Ole Miss, barely squeaking past Umass at the last second only thanks to a missed FG, then suddenly seeming competitive versus SC? Well take away a school record 91 and 100 yard kick return for two TDs. and the offense only produced a 48-20 game. Maybe SC expected them to lay down, maybe Vandy is just taking more time to turn around. Either way, I see no way we aren't well prepared for this game after the last two years, and our bowl eligibility possibly hinging on this game. We exact revenge, especially this late in the season when we should be playing at a much higher level.
In a nutshell, it's not too farfetched to see us go 7-5, possibly 8-5 with a bowl win. I think this season begins our turnaround and the future looks better than ever with our level of recruiting. This staff and these players will get it done. I look for any and all feedback, thanks for reading and Go Vols.
