UT had just come off of a huge win over Florida, 45-3. The Vols were riding high, and Bama was 2-3, having strung together a couple of wins after starting out 0-3. The Vols were 2 touchdown favorites to finally stem the Tide. 2 touchdowns, however, were not even scored in this game, for either team. It was a defensive struggle, and ended up being one of the worst losses in Johnny Majors' tenure. Bama won 9-6.

I bring this up for one simple reason...no matter how good or bad either team is supposed to be, it does not matter in this game. We have to take the fight to Alabama and keep it there for 60 minutes, and beyond, if it takes that. As long as UT gets the win.

GO VOLS!

Yes, I remember that game. Majors was all proud 'cause he played it close to the vest, but was lining up for what would be a game winning field goal. Instead, it was blocked and returned by Alabama into field goal range. The only way Alabama's offense could have gotten into field goal range. And of course they hit it and won 9-6.

But I also remember 1995.

Very similar to the Red Sox 10-3 victory over the Yankees seems to have lifted the monkey (or Babe Ruth) off their backs..... that 41-14 pasting of the Tide in 1995 all but obliterated any lingering doubts that the Vols were through with the psychological mumbo jumbo related to Alabama that plagued them for 2 decades.

How can I ever forget? In both 90 and 91, I thought we had by far the better team, and both years we lost the game because Coach Majors refused to open up the offense. The crazy thing is that we had one of the leading offenses in the nation both years.

Big Difference UT hoped to win that one but expect to win this one.

True. I just hope that stronghold they had never comes back.
