This program, for all the flashes of progress and hope, is still basically what it has always been: a team that can’t get over the hump. Last year, we pi$$ed away any true meaningfulness from the Alabama win by promptly laying down like a gaggle of losers to a mediocre South Carolina team. With a shot at the playoffs, we crapped all over ourselves when we were a big favorite. Now, we listen to the “the Vols haven’t won in the Swamp in decades” crap and, of course, live up to all the worst predictions. We gave the Billy Napier era the kickstart it needs at precisely the right time.
Heck, the best thing for a struggling rival to do is to schedule us. We’ll put ‘‘em back on track with a pathetic performance about every time. And if the game has any championship implications, you can rest assured that the Vols will crap the bed.
We are a 7-5 team, maybe even 5-7, unless something changes drastically. The only thing certain about Tennessee since 1998 is that we don’t win when it matters - and too often we don’t win even scrub games. We aren’t a championship program, and I don’t think we will be any time soon. We are exactly what the first three games of this season have shown.
