With the tournament starting, I thought I'd pay respects to my favorite sports author of my generation, John Feinstein. He passed away late last week. I personally was fortunate to talk with him several times. We were both in the same age group in Masters Swimming and often swam in the same heats in meets around the DC area. We'd chat it up both before and after our swims. He was always very kind and accommodating. I enjoyed listening to him.

Very knowledgeable on so many nuances of sports, especially college basketball. I had the opportunity to talk to him at times and he was always respectful and very humble. He was a great guest on a variety of sports talk radio shows like the Tony Kornheiser Show and even National Public Radio. His books and columns were fun to read.

Bob Knight had anticipated "A Season on the Brink" being a flattering portrait of a well-disciplined and successful basketball program. After it was published, and it was revealed to be anything but flattering, Knight called John Feinstein a "pimp" and a "whore." Feinstein did an interview on CBS where he said, "I wish he would tell me which one I am, so I'd know how to dress." LOL!

I thought Season One The Brink was excellent in that it showed the two, very different, sides to Knight.

There was the winning. But he made his players graduate at IU. He’d frequently speak to the students at IU. He apparently treated his former players well.

BUT, that takes us to the other side…the coaching part. And while the results at IU were excellent, the methods and antics were something else entirely. Batsh!t crazy stuff.

Feinstein captured all of it well IMO.
