Our downward slide started with a upset at the hands of Matt Mauck, It ends by upsetting Maty Mauk.

Quality thread. That 2001 SEC championship game not only started the TN slide downward, but it also helped create the beast that is SABAN.

Why did we lose that game and give this man his first SEC title helping him create a National Title team at LSU, thus later making him the target for Bama's hire.

It all started with this game.

Dang. This irks me even more. Hadn't thought of it this way. But yea, we straight crapped the bed and created the beast that now devours us.

Poor Maty Mauk ,we must destroy him now. It's revenge time.

if TN had won this game, there very well may never have been a Saban coached Alabama team. Saban may not have been able to turn the corner at LSU, and thus they may have never become a power. Thus, he would never have been hired by Bama. If we had appeared in the Na Cha that season our recruiting would have keep rolling full force into the 2000s, and perhaps 2005 never would have happened. This game had HUGE implications on a number of programs.

It may be nice to think that, but Saban had already turned the corner at LSU. He had already upset Fulmer and UT in his very 1st year at LSU and he was already making huge strides with recruiting and had already taken the 3-8 LSU team he inherited to the SECCG in just his 2nd year. He was going to be a success at LSU regardless. But man, we certainly accelerated the process for him.
