Richt and Grantham did not

I still say this is more on the players. It should be common sense to knock the ball down in that situation

This.

Richt is protecting his players. When you get to this level, you really shouldn't have to be told before the play to knock the ball down; no more than he should have to tell Murray to throw the ball away instead of taking a sack if they only have 30 seconds left and no timeouts.

75% player, 25% coach. Players play the game and they knew knocking it down was the right play. That being said, it is crazy on the field sometimes and that moment was HUGE! A reminder from the coach was probably needed to be sure that knocking the ball down was in the forefront of their mind. It's not a blame thing... It's football.

They were looking to make the highlight reel. And well they made it. Kinda like when you see the DB go in for the knockout punch on a RB or WR only to bounce off watching them run 70 yards for a TD.

Certainly much of the blame goes on the players, good for Richt for trying to take ownership. That something he likely picked up from watch Dooley all those years at UT.

At the same time I have been trying to think when I have seen a situation where a DB knocks the ball down and I cant think of one of the top of my head. I know in my flag fball league it happens all the time but I cant remember a D1/NFL game where it does.
These guys are such YOUNG phenomenal athletes I am guessing they just dont think that way. They see ball they go get ball.
