"A year ago, Mark Richt was the star attraction at SEC Media Days. His Georgia Bulldogs were the preseason No. 1 pick in the land. His backfield rivaled any in the nation. Life was good for the (then) 48-year-old coach with two SEC titles and five top-10 finishes in seven seasons.

However, his eighth year at Georgia was a house of horrors. It started with "The Blackout" against Alabama, which saw the Tide jump out to a 31-0 halftime lead. Five weeks later, Florida eviscerated the Bulldogs 49-10. They ended the regular season with a pungent loss to Georgia Tech. Even though Georgia won the Capital One Bowl to finish with a solid 10-3 record, it was too little, too late. The damage was done and fans have been grumbling ever since."

I liked this part (Finebaum shows CLK some love):

There are threats from other places as well. Certainly, Tennessee is already more formidable on the recruiting trail under Lane Kiffin. And it's possible that Auburn — under Gene Chizik — could be a tougher recruiting foe as well. With two straight season openers at the Georgia Dome, Saban is stealing Georgia players for Alabama as well

I don't get much sense that the leghumpers have soured on Richt -- yet. So far they mostly seem unhappy that Richt won't get rid of Willie Martinez. They are not happy, sure, but they're not fire-the-coach unhappy yet. I think it'll be a couple more seasons before they really turn on him -- unless, of course, they lose to Tech again this year. Richt can't afford that.

One of my UGA friends was giving me some crap a few months ago about what an idiot Kiffin is, and how over his head he is, etc. etc. etc., so I offered to wager him $200 that Richt is gone before Kiffin is. He wouldn't take it.

I agree. He's maybe not as infallible as he once was, but they still love Richt down here. He reminds me of Fulmer circa 2003.

The two things that Richt cannot afford are 1) to start losing even semi-regularly to Tech, and 2) to have his program drop back down to #3 in the division behind Tennessee and that Kiffin idiot. They're in the same position vis-a-vis Florida that we were in the 90s -- depressingly but kind of comfortably #2 ("It sucks that we're in the same division as the Gator juggernaut, but we still have a great team"). Nobody's going to run Richt out of Athens for losing to Meyer and Florida, but if they start losing to Lane Freaking Kiffin and UGA starts regularly finishing third again, then their fans will be pissed.

And these days they don't think UGA is ever supposed to lose to Tech at all. Ever. Paul Johnson may end up being the worst thing that's happened to Mark Richt since he took the job.

Again . . . I agree. Atlanta has never been quite as "automatic" recruiting-wise as UGA wished that it was. Having the hometown team as a viable alternative is never a good thing for UGA.

Don't you think though that any big name, pro-style offensive guy's going to probably pick UGA in the end because of GT's style?

Most UGA fans take issues with Richt not making a change on D with Martinez... I like to remind them that Fulmer was loyal to his staff, too... UGA is about 2 seasons away from mediocrity.

I think mediocrity is closer than you think.

No way. As long as they have Rodney Garner and continue to pull in the stud players, they will be fine.

Fulmer thrived many years on having better talent than the opposition.

Fans will get tired of doing so little with so much...

He's not there yet. The guy be UF twice, he's got to be like god incarnant to the bulldog fans.

I think eventual - if he's not winnning NC's soon - he will be on the hot seat in the next few years. However, I think right now the coach who should be on hot seat next in SEC is spurrier - he really hasn't managed to do squat at so. car in his four years there and it doesn't look like it will be getting much better anytime soon. But the cocks are happy idiots just to have him there coaching, so they won't put him on that seat

Squat at SCjr is akin to UT winning SEC championships. They hang their hat on seasons like that.

Anyone who says Lane Kiffin is on the hot seat has had absolutely zero contact with the Tennessee fanbase.

Fulmer managed to improve his ranking after a lost last year, before he was fired. That site's neat, but doesn't have it's pulse on any situation.
