Don't know much about this but found this interesting.

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says that he is the target of an extortion attempt and that he has asked the FBI to investigate.

RICK PITINO

For the past several days, the media world in Louisville has been abuzz about what is going on with Rick Pitino. It was likely a story was going to break very soon and with rumors of FBI folks making themselves known in the last few days, Pitino beat the media story by announcing that he was being extorted by someone and had called the FBI. Little has come out officially about what is going on beyond the statement made by Pitino and it is clear that among the Louisville media, there is a hesitation to be the “first to report” what is happening.

I will just say this. I know the issue in this case and will also wait for someone else to make it public. But there is a lot going on here and Pitino’s statement is just the tip of the iceberg. This has the potential to be quite an ugly affair and is the type of thing that will dominate the news once it is leaked for some time. As I once said in another context on here, “the FBI doesnt mess around” and this will be something we continue to hear about going forward. The interesting question to me will be which mainstream outlet breaks the silence first. I guess we shall see.

UPDATE: After confirmation by her lawyer Thomas Clay, The Courier Journal and WDRB have identified the woman as Karen Sypher, the former wife of UL basketball equipment manager and longtime Rick Pitino friend, Tim Sypher. Below is her picture from the Derby last year:

Any one heard anymore or anything else about this?

Crazy. Hope they find the creep that's doing the extorting.

its not the equipment managers wife as the stories suggest. Its actually Travis Ford and John Pelphrey, retaliating for Pitino not landing them the UK job.

The plot thickens. A local TV station in Louisville interviewed the alleged extortionist, Karen Sypher on Sunday night, then they declined to air the interview. Something's not quite right here.

Brian I agree there is more to this story that is yet to be released.

The best "story" I have heard is one about the FBI in also checking into point shaving at UL. ( I don't believe a word of that but is funny)

Isn't Karen Sypher the subject of the investigation, as in she's the one that is alleged to have done the attempted extorting? And as a side note, men have been known to have affairs with other men. I know nothing...just sayin'.

There is definitely more to this story. Rick Patino's son, who's been a Louisville, has (suddenly) announced he's leaving to take a job at florida. My first reaction was that Patino must have been sleeping with this woman--but I'll bet it was his son, who perhaps broke up her marriage--and now she or someone associated with her is trying to get money from Patino.

Who in the world is Patino?

No, that's Piteener.

Patino is Spanish for "I am skating."

then he's pitino's bizarro double who led UL to a skating championship only to then turn on his school and take a coaching job at their rival UK!

Also his hair is never slicked back and he wears regular black suits :)

What begs the question is why is the wife mad, and why would the trainer says "I'm going to defend myself vigoursly against these bizarre allegations"?

if the affair is with the wife, then the trainer should just be mad. otherwise, what's he "vigoursly defending himself" from?

I'm thinking LULU, might be on to something here.

It's a logical conclusion if you read between the lines. Pitino and the trainer are projecting the image of a unified, denial-filled front. That only happens when two people are on the same side of a nasty allegation.

when I first heard about it, I thought she was trying to blackmail Pitino because her husband and Pitino had something going on

Well, here seems to be the latest on this Pitino-Sypher extortion dilemma:

Karen Sypher indicted in Rick Pitino extortion case - ESPN

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The estranged wife of a longtime aide to Rick Pitino was indicted Tuesday on federal charges of trying to extort money from the Louisville men's basketball coach and lying to the FBI.

Karen Cunagin Sypher, 49, faces a combined maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $500,000 fine if convicted of the two charges, federal authorities said. Sypher is the estranged wife of Louisville equipment manager Tim Sypher.

Karen Sypher's attorney, Thomas Clay, said she would plead not guilty during her arraignment Wednesday.

The case became public last month when Pitino released a statement saying someone had tried to extort him. Pitino said he reported it to the FBI, and Karen Sypher surrendered to authorities a few days later when she was named in a criminal complaint.

The complaint said Tim Sypher brought Pitino a written list of demands from his wife, including college tuition for her children, two cars, her house paid off and $3,000 per month. The demands later escalated to $10 million instead.

Authorities have not said what sort of information Karen Sypher might have been trying to use to extort Pitino. They have said the coach believed it was related to an unspecified 2003 encounter with her.

Dug this old thread up for more on the extortion case. A kentucky man was charged w/ aiding and abetting:

Kentucky man charged in Rick Pitino extortion case - ESPN

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Federal prosecutors have charged a Kentucky man with helping an alleged extortion attempt against University of Louisville coach Rick Pitino.

Lester Goetzinger is charged with aiding and abetting 49-year-old Karen Cunagin Sypher in her alleged attempt to extort millions from Pitino.

Court papers filed late Wednesday show prosecutors have reached a deal with Goetzinger that requires him to go through a pretrial diversion program. The deal means charges against Goetzinger will be dismissed after a year if he does not break the law.

Prosecutors claim Sypher tried to extort millions to pay for college tuition for her children and her house. She has pleaded not guilty.

Federal prosecutors wouldn't comment on the deal Thursday morning and Goetzinger's attorney did not immediately return a telephone message.
