I thought he played an excellent game today, including that huge pass breakup in the endzone. I think our LB corps has a chance to be special next year with McCoy, Mayo and Karl.

Where do you guys think each one will line up next year? McCoy seems to be suited well for the WLB spot, but Mayo is playing there now with Karl at SLB. Which guy do you think takes the MLB spot?

Good question. I think our starters will be Jerod Mayo, Ryan Karl, and Ellix (sp?) Wilson at MLB. McCoy could start anywhere in the nation, and he will see a lot of playing time next year... but I don't think he'll start at UT until Karl graduates.

Rico McCoy was the backup middle linebacker this year. I don't see why he wouldn't start there next year.

Rico McCoy is the backup WLB. Ellix Wilson is the backup MLB.

Only recently. In previous games, McCoy came in at MLB when Mitchell came out. McCoy filled in at WLB because he's the best non-starting linebacker we have.

Rico McCoy has been the 2nd string WLB since week 1 against California. Check the depth chart. Also, Ellix Wilson has been 2nd string MLB since week 1. He's played very well when he gets the chance.

I'm almost certain the week when Marvin Mitchell was playing injured it was announced that Rico MoCoy would be splitting time with #40. I think Ellix will be quality, but I think Rico will be even better. Maybe under normal circumstances, Rico is WLB and Ellix is MLB, but I'm pretty sure McCoy has seen a decent amount of time in the middle this year.

Agree to disagree. :)

Well, I'll agree mostly. If the depth chart showed McCoy at WLB initially, then that is probably where his future lies. However, I'm still pretty sure he's played some MLB this year. So basically, I'll agree with your original prediction of McCoy at WLB.

Whatever happens, our LB corps should be solid next season.

Check. How about Dorian Davis? I've seen him a lot on special teams, but haven't heard much about his future at LB. I think he's somewhat undersized, but it would be nice to see him get in the mix.

Dorian Davis is somewhat burried in the depth chart behind Jerod Mayo and Rico McCoy at WLB. At SLB, UT has Ryan Karl and Adam Meyers-White, so he could possibly beat out Meyers-White for second-string at that position.

Seems like he has some talent, but it will be hard for him to break the rotation in the next couple of years. I'm guessing he'll end up using a redshirt this season.

My advice is to hit the weight room hard this off seson...we got our butts handed to us on D this year by the Big teams..(ARK, FLORIDA, LSU,)

McCoy did play hard today and had a good game. BUT I know he was out of postion in run support some that allow UK to gain first downs and some plays he was supposed to cover the TE and RB but lost them which resulted in big plays. Hes good and will be awesome but he didn't play perfect today. I was at the game today and was listening to Bob, Tim and Randy and they kept saying how McCoy was taking wrong angles and getting lost in coverage.

I think either guy is well suited for the mlb spot. both of them are going to be outstanding football players, the linebackers as a whole are all pretty special players.

Today I sat right behind UT bench. After the first KY TD, all DL and LB came our, sitting on the bench. Chavis came to Karl and pointed his finger right to Karl's nose, yelling at Karl (badly reprimand). Karl is good, but I think McCoy is able to compete with him. Or can we figure our a scheme to put Mayo, Karl and McCoy on the field at the same time?

Yes, obviously, we have problem in LB position today.

Yeah, Karl did miss some tackles today at key times. Defense as a whole didnt tackle well

Another option would be to go to the 3-4 defense. Alabama used it effectively some this year and some of the pros are returning to it. You need a stud noseguard that can bury the center for it to be effective. I doubt if Chavis is versatile enough to ever consider any radical change in our defense!:glare:

Maybe he isn't an absolute freaking moron. If we went to a 3-4 with our defensive line we would give up approximately 350 rushing yards per game.

Yes, with the present line. But with guys like Mahelona I'm not so sure. With four great linebackers,at least there would have been an extra backer to stop the TE screen.:bash:

With our personnel exactly like it is right now, then yes, it would be a mistake, but next year, if key people put on some pounds, it could work. It begins with Bolden getting stronger and significantly bigger, or we would have to land a huge run-stopping DT in this class. You need a big DT, and big DEs.

Turk would be a perfect DE for the 34, but he's gone, so you move Mapu and Fisher back to DE where they started in high school, but they keep the weight and keep getting stronger. Fisher would be your rush end, since he's better at rushing the passer. Then you move Ayers back to LB, and there's your Willie McGinest/Joey Porter-type pass rushing LB. McCoy and Mayo put on a few pounds and play the middle to stop the run, while Chris Donald (assuming he signs with UT, and puts on a few pounds as well) plays the weakside. Karl gets left out, because he's too small.

This would also give Chavis many more options to blitz. Think about how much trouble Peyton has had with the 3-4. Now imagine the problems college QBs would have with it.

A few key players would have to beef up to make it work, but the players will be there, in my opinion. It's all dependant on the DT, cause if he can't hold his ground against the run, the whole defense fails.

Do any college teams actually run a 3-4? I know Alabama played a little this year, but they didn't go full-scale 3-4.
