I'm full Butch and know we are rebuilding, but why has there not been any improvement with BASIC tackling skills? It confuses me(i have low APR,serious).

You really think our d is as bad as last year? You have a very poor memory.

Attrition is our worst enemy at this point. This football program has been decimated due to all the coaching changes. It is hard to win championships when part of the team is walk ons. Recruiting and retention are the keys to championships.

The same players who could not cover and tackle last year can't cover and tackle this year. When we get new, better players they will cover & tackle better. Cam Sutton came here with the ability to bring people to the ground. Coaching merely enhances his ability. But coaching can not create ability. Good players are recruited. The whole "coach em up" myth is just that, a myth. You have to have talent to work with.

The “20/8-hour” rule precludes student-athletes from spending more than 20 hours a week in countable athletically related activities (and no more than eight hours during the off-season).

Due to this limitation if a defensive player is not a good tackler in high school (and there are many) they will most likely not become one in college. The coaching staffs in D-1 football do not have time to teach the guys proper tackling technique give time constraints with everything else the athletes have to learn. Bad tackling is a common problem in college and pros. I do wish there was more emphasis on tackling though.

The Vols just played the No. 1 and No. 9 teams in the nation on the road in back to back weeks. Bama scored about their season average of 46. Missouri was held to their 2nd lowest point total of the year. You can't beat anyone scoring 10 and 3 points respectively. The special teams and defense are the bright spots for this team. The offense just can't get it in the end zone and have turned it over and over and over. That puts additional strain on the defense as they stay on the field, often short fields, while Worley's leg gets tired from punting after another 3 and out. Its a new era if you can't score 30+ a game you will lose more than you win.

Because the players aren't good. It's hard to tackle people who run by you.

Good tackling starts with having your feet in good position. Hard to do that when you can't catch them, you're left reaching and arm tackling. However, effort and desire plays a part and I think it was definitely lacking last night.

Butch Jones said something interesting in an interview when asked about the lack of talent and how it affects practice, CBJ"S answer was that ideally he wants to go full pads full hitting 2 practices a week and 1 day shell practice.

I think with the lack of talent and depth that their is not a lot of physical practices happening, cant take a chance getting someone hurt, so I do think that has something to do with it.

I also think a lot of it is bad habits, things you get away with in high school but not at this level, I will use AJ as an example I am sick and tired of the shoulder pad tackle, he needs to start breaking down and start laying the pads to some people instead of that candyazz throw them down by their shoulder pads. I also see him go in hole to take on a FB and get blasted bc he is standing straight up, he has got to learn to break down and take that FB on and clog the hole.

Thanx man. Its refreshing to have actual feedback on something on VN without it turning into "who can be the biggest smarta**".

As others have stated, this years defense is much improved from last year. But it is clear that we lack speed on the back end of our defense. I am also confident that our coach's don't teach bad angles. Part of that is instinctual football, and a few of our players don't seem to have it. To lay full blame on "fired Georgia coaches" is dumb. As I saw someone say, coaches, like players, improve as well. We simply need more speed and playmakers on defense. Don't understand why people don't see this.

Thanx, it makes sense that lack of depth can affect practice as well as game time play.
