Nikki was an acquaintance in my time at UT. Those teams had some nice people that I got to meet and talk with quite a few times.
For being uber competitive and tenacious on the court, Nikki was truly a very nice person.

Awesome player; I saw her play in person at the TN GA All Star game. I was there to see her teammate; the mother of Ally Weathers who plays for the Tide.

LVFL Nikki McCray-Penson Passes Away - University of Tennessee Athletics

"Our hearts are broken as we mourn the loss of a beloved Lady Vol. We also offer our love and sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues across the country. Nikki had a bright and loving personality and touched the lives of everyone she met. Her kind and genuine spirit will be missed."

--Tennessee Women's Basketball Head Coach Kellie Harper

"My heart is so heavy. One of the most beautiful souls I've ever met. The one who genuinely went out their way to understand me when I was so misunderstood. The one who was always there. You fought so long and hard, and I am so grateful to have known you. I love you. Rest easy.

--Tennessee Forward Rickea Jackson (previously played for Nikki McCray-Penson at Mississippi State)

No no no!! This is awful news… she was in my class at UT, and friends of a friend, so we hung out with her at dinner once and I remember her saying “I wanna be an All American, but Pat just wants me to improve on defense.”

And we were like “you just got here, like you’re a freshman. You have to have patience.”

She was like “I don’t have any patience. I need to be an all American this year “

I didn’t know what to make of her. She was pretty funny and very outgoing. But yea, she became an all American, then Olympian, then WNBA star. She was always super friendly to me bc I knew her, and that's just the TN way.

I used to see her around campus, even played bball with her once and she was great on defense! I saw her around town snd she was always the same, friendly and humble.

One of my favorite lady Vols ever, maybe bc I knew her a bit. But she had a great personality, and more desire and heart than anybody I ever met.

Terrible news. God bless her soul, and my condolences to all her friends and family..
