Rodney King, key L.A. riots figure, dead at 47 - latimes.com

King became a symbol for police brutality and the troubled relations between the LAPD and minority residents. He was eventually awarded a $3.8-million settlement, but the money and fame brought him little solace. He had repeated run-ins with the law and as of April said he was broke.

"I sometimes feel like I'm caught in a vise. Some people feel like I'm some kind of hero," he told The Times earlier this year. "Others hate me. They say I deserved it. Other people, I can hear them mocking me for when I called for an end to the destruction, like I'm a fool for believing in peace."

Glad his celebrity tour is over, but sorry for his early demise. Esecially if it was from his continuing substance abuse.

Wow on the hate on RK. He pretty much brought awareness on police brutality in LA 20 years ago. That and the use of videoing every thing we see out of the ordinary today. He was a flawed individual, but who isn't? RIP RK.

I don't ever wish death on someone, but wasn't there a whole lot more to the story than people generally realize? Like wasn't he speeding drunk through a city and then resisting arrest?

......I won't be one to shed tears for the man.

But for reasons I cant comprehend, people seem to have a problem with the fact that he caught an excessive beatdown, eventually won a judgement and didn't ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after.

Took the cops on a 8 mile chase (didn't want to pull over since a DUI would violate his parole from a previous robbery conviction) through a residential area driving speeds up to 80 mph with a blood alcohol two times the limit. Then resisted arrest.

Got 3.8 million and proceeded to piss it all away on drugs, alcohol, and of course a rap label (a must have right?) and has also been arrested several times since.
1995 - Hit and run
2003 - Speeding and running a traffic light while under the influence of alcohol. Then failed to yield to police (when you reward stupidity though are you really surprised when it happens again) and then wrecked his car into a house.
2011 - reckless driving

He also married one of the jurors in his civil trial. Must have really been love though since he'd already pissed away his settlement money by then.

I'm no where close to happy but I don't think I'll shed a tear for the guy either.

I agree he acted wrongly in evading the police initially. I also agree that he blew the judgment money and committed other minor crimes afterwards.

But let's be honest, the"good riddance" folks on here have a bit of a chip on their collective shoulder about him and the incident and what it came to symbolize.

I'm surprised by the disrespect of the dead. I was brought up to respect the dead by my parents and grandparents. Some of y'all act like he raped five white women, robbed three banks, smoked meth in the white house and pissed on Ronald Regans grave. He ain't the only person in history that has blowed 3.8 million. Athletes, lotto winners just to name a few. The man has passed on be respectful, even though he wasn't on the straight and narrow.

I wouldn't say good riddance, but it sounds like he did it to himself. I definitely don't think he deserves any sympathy

RK and those like him are not worth mourning over. BTW, neither are the ones who beat on him.
