I am older than dirt.
Went to UF undergrad from '82-'86 and then back to law school in 1992. When I was a student there, the FSU game was it. The whole enchilada. The game. The be all and end all to the season.
The fans literally rolled their eyes when Spurrier came in and started talking about the goal being to win the SEC. It did not dawn on us for a few years that he was right and that, in order to compete for the national championship, the SEC was first.
I mean, we had never won the SEC (not legally, anyway). All we cared about was a decent bowl game and beating FSU. When Georgia occassionally fielded a decent team (see Hershel Walker), we cared about that, too, but mostly so as to continue to brag to our Ivy League friends that the game was the biggest outdoor cocktail party in the world.
My, how things have changed.
I'm telling you folks right now that the game with UT is rapidly becoming the big one, the game, the season. Perhaps its because the two teams have traded the SEC East for so long. Maybe its because the games have been so close and controversial of late. Maybe its because, let's face it, the coaches have not gotten along.
Bottom line is that, if you don't have a ticket already, don't look for one down here.
