EXCLUSIVE: One of the biggest comedies of the 1990s is making a comeback. I hear an eight-episode limited series revival of the hit ABC blue-collar family comedy Roseanne is in the works with the key cast members reprising their roles, including Roseanne Barr, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert, with Laurie Metcalf and others in the process of joining them.

The new installment is executive produced by the original series’ EPs Tom Werner, Barr and Bruce Helford as well as Gilbert and Whitney Cummings, with Helford and Cummings co-running. The project is currently in the marketplace, with multiple networks bidding, including original Roseanne home ABC, and Netflix, which has been staging reboots of classic sitcoms including Full House and One Day at a Time, along with new installments of cult favorites Arrested Development and Gilmore Girls.

Just like with the upcoming new season of Will & Grace — which considered a streaming play before closing a deal at NBC, where the original series had aired — ABC is considered the sentimental choice to air the new Roseanne episodes.

Roseanne remains a gold standard for its realistic portrayal of a working-class American family. It centered on the Conners, who lived, barely scraping by, in the fictional town of Lanford, IL. The revival comes as networks, and particularly ABC, are making a concerted effort to better reflect the lives of everyday Americans.

I hear the intent is for all principal Roseanne actors to appear in some capacity in the reboot, including The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki.

Like NBC’s Will & Grace comeback, which was triggered by a short, election-themed reunion video the stars of the series made last fall, Goodman and Gilbert also recently staged a mini-Roseanne revival in a video filmed during Goodman’s visit to CBS’ The Talk, which Gilbert created, co-hosts and executive produces. (You can watch it below.)

During Goodman’s interview, he was enthusiastic about doing a Roseanne reboot. “Oh, hell yes … if we could get everyone together,” he told co-host Julie Chen. “The Big R [Barr] and I did a pilot about five years ago that didn’t go anywhere … but we were very happy to work together.”

Gilbert was more cautious when asked if she would do a reboot. “I would,” she said. “Your only fear is you don’t want to do a bad version, because you don’t want to damage what’s been done.”

Roseanne, produced by indie Carsey-Werner, was a big ratings hit and ran for nine seasons on ABC. May 20 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Roseanne series finale, which drew 16 million viewers. The family sitcom earned Emmy nominations for Barr, Goodman, Metcalf and Gilbert, with Barr winning one statuette and Metcalf three.

On her website in 2009, Barr gave her detailed take on where each of the main characters from the show would be in a possible Roseanne revival: Roseanne and Jackie opening the first medical marijuana dispensary in Lanford; Dan reappearing alive after faking his death; DJ being published; Mark dying in Iraq; David leaving Darlene for a woman half his age; Darlene coming out, meeting a woman and having a baby with her; Becky working at Walmart; Arnie befriending the governor of Illinois and remarrying Nancy; Bev selling a painting for $10,000; Jerry and the grandsons forming a boy band; and Bonnie being arrested for selling crack.

I didn't read all of that but did t John Goodman's character die in the last couple of seasons?

I loved the show early on. I related to it pretty well. It went on way too long though.

The very last episode. I don't think it showed him die. It consisted of Roseanne writing a memoir and describing his passing away.

Roseanne was a writing a book and in the very last episode she reveals that everything was fiction and that she made it up to make her life sound better. So...they never won the lottery...Goodman died...her daughters were actually dating the opposite boyfriends in real life and etc...so pretty much the whole show was a lie.

Remember that time the Padres thought Roseanne Barr would be a good choice to sing the national anthem? A woman who did nothing but yell and screech the entirety of her show? Why did anyone assume she could sing?

I quit watching before the lottery season. Seemed like I recall Rosanne getting jealous of Goodman's rising fame and wrote him out of the show. But like I said... I probably missed the last 3 or 4 seasons.

Reunion series is a go!

ABC officially confirmed today what has been speculated for months. A revival of the hit blue-collar family sitcom Roseanne has been greenlighted at ABC. The eight-episode reboot, which Deadline first reported exclusively, will feature the original cast – Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky). It’s slated to premiere in 2018. Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role.

There’s been a question of whether Goranson or Chalke would play the Becky character. Goranson originated the role before exiting in Season 5 to attend college. That’s when Chalke was cast and the two split the role in Season 8 before Chalke handled the part solely for the final ninth season.

Another thing that’s clear — Dan (Goodman) is alive. In the series’ finale, it was revealed that the character had previously died of a heart attack and his appearance throughout the final season was actually a manifestation of Roseanne’s character’s writing. Barr, however, came up with a workaround in a 2009 blog post if a reunion series ever were to happen. In it, she imagines “Dan shows up alive after faking his own death.” Stay tuned for that one.

“The Conners’ joys and struggles are as relevant – and hilarious – today as they were then, and there’s really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne,” said ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey.

Roseanne will be ABC’s sole multi-camera comedy next season, following the cancellations of Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing and Dr. Ken.

When it premiered on ABC, the series broke new ground for its realistic portrayal of a working-class family, the Conners, barely scraping by in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois. It also dominated the ratings as one of the highest-rated television series on the air for its near-decade run. A comedy about ordinary people who faced day-to-day survival with a sense of the absurdity of it all, the inimitable Roseanne was its epicenter. The Conner family will continue to deal with the economic challenges of living pay check to pay check in 2018.

In its nine-season run, the series won a Peabody Award and a Golden Globe Award for best television series (comedy or musical). Barr and Goodman each won Golden Globes for best performance by an actress and actor. Barr went on to win an Emmy as lead actress, and Metcalf won two supporting actress Emmys for her work on the series.

Barr will executive produce, along with Sara Gilbert, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, Whitney Cummings and Tony Hernandez. The series hails from Carsey-Werner Television.
