GAINESVILLE -- Florida football players Andre Caldwell and Reggie Lewis and former Gator Dee Webb are under investigation for their roles in an early Sunday morning incident here, local sources and published reports said.

According to a report in Tuesday's Gainesville Sun, police responded to a call concerning a gun shot fired into an apartment near Webb's at The Cambridgeon SW 27th Street.

After finding a shell casing behind Webb's apartment, officers met with Webb, who was accompanied by Caldwell, Lewis and another UF student, according to the Sun.

Officers then searched Webb's apartment and confiscated two rifles, an AR-15 and an AK-47. They spotted the AR-15 in the apartment through a sliding glass door. Officers later found a 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded .38 caliber revolver on seats in a vehicle in which three players rode that morning.

None were arrested because Webb legally owned the guns and police could not determined which, if any of the players, fired the shot.

Gainesville police spokesman Sgt. Keith Kameg did not return a several calls seeking confirmation of the incident's details. Police said documentation would not be available until at least the end of the week.

UF sports information director Steve McClain said the football coaching staff learned of the incident Monday, and that head Coach Urban Meyer will wait for the investigation's completion before deciding whether to comment.

"We're waiting for some things to come clear," he said. Two sources close to the program said the issue, at least in the near future, would likely be handled internally by the team. .

Despite declaring for the NFL Draft last month, Webb still spends time in Gainesville.

As a UT fan I'm really trying not to throw rocks out of my glass house. Let's just hope this isn't a snowball effect. It will be interesting to see how UM handles it.

Kudos for bringing it out.

To me this is simple:

If they determine that any player fired a weapon, especially an assault rifle, in an apartment complex, then that player is kicked out of the university. Period. No "it was an accident" or any crap like that. Gone.

Good point. If the guns are legal, I guess there wasn't much they could do. To me, its just frightening that ANY college kid has a freakin' AK47.

well, if it was a semi auto, it's perfectly legal. Now, if it's full auto, that's a no-no and he can get in trouble.

The guns themselves really don't bother me. They are both semi-auto but just look cool. You'd be amazed at the number of guns on campus. We had a pretty good arsenal in our fraternity house at UT. Mostly shotguns and hunting rifles but there were a couple handguns too. We never had any "shots fired" reports though.

Yes, well, as I said if the guns are legal, not much you can do about it except to shake your head at the idiocy. But if they figure out who fired it, that guy is gone.

I hope Florida's gun laws aren't as lax as Tennessees seem to be.Point, I know a guy in trouble alot growing up and dang if he doesn't have a freakin gun permit. I guess you have to have a felony or enough time passes if convicted of one. Felony or not, ridiculous:banghead:

So is it a requirement to carry that kind of arsenal to class? Sounds like a ruff place to go to school. :gun:

to have the guns just to collect, i dont see much wrong with that however with the position that those kids are in being under the public eye like they are that's not just real smart cause not much good can come of that stuff but to even take it one step further and have a loaded .38 in your apartment??? that just has trouble written ALL over it imo, hope the kid just has it for protection but i had no idea gainesville was that rough of a place for a UF football player

I think this is where Ted Bundy (serial killer from the mid seventies), killed those nursing students.

No, that was at FSU, in Tallahassee.

its probably none of my business but why would one person need that much firepower. im pretty sure that soldiers aren't lucky enough to have any of those weapons

I don't remember Gainesville as requiring that you have much more than a pen knife. Guess the town has changed ....

P.S. Vote for Pedro

Reading these responses makes me glad all firearms don't need to be registered.

Never should the guns be loaded though. I live alone and still have locks on mine. My guns don't scare me but other peoples do.

I don't see where the story is.
Two players and a former one were questioned but not charged.
The former player had guns that were licensed and legal.
The article says they(3players) are "under investigation", yet the officers on the scene found insufficient reason to bring charges.
It is not illegal to possess weapons(yet), and there was no proof any of these young men fired a weapon.

Again, where's the story?
Outside of the simple fact that they were Florida Gators...

I think the story is that it appears as though the shot fired probably came from them.

Yeah, maybe I just jumped on that response. But if they'd had proof I'm sure the officers would have cuffed 'em in two seconds.
They didn't. No arrest, no story. At least as I see it...

If I'm Meyer, I am putting the screws to them to find out why so much firepower and if they had anything to do with the shooting, at all. Got to put the kibosh on this immediately.

Well lawgator, if you count each player individually as having one run in with the law then UF only has nine more run ins to go to catch up with our tally from last year  :banghead:

If this was in Miami I could understand it, they being soldiers and all, but an AK frickin' 47?

Without a "carry permit," isn't that illegal in and of itself? IMO, this all sounds like nothing but trouble just waiting to happen (and maybe it DID the other night).
