For us to make a bowl game. It was a great win, but it seemed every time lane and Hurd got the ball there was no space to run. I think all they need is a little daylight on the first level and they can make defenses look bad. The one time Hurd got out in space on the screen pass, he made some great moves and took it in from 15 yards out. Maybe they were stacking the box to take away the run the whole game. I thought they would have opened up a little in the running game since our short passes were working so well, but It never really materialized. What do y'all think? Do you think usu game plan was to make Worley beat them, and that's exactly what he did? Run game suffered because of it. That was my observation.

I agree that the run blocking needs to get better but, but Utah State committed to stopping the run and stack the box. I do believe that UT will have better games rushing the ball, but UT just doesn't have the sort of talent on the O-Line to rush effectively against some of the D-Lines it will face in the SEC. Sometimes, a quick out pass is just as effective as a run, though.

Worley will be running for his life most of the year unfortunately. Especially now with Gilliam out and having 0 depth.

we know

but alot of people do not know that USU will stop the run on just about anyone. Wisconsin, USC, you name it. Its the other areas of their defense that sucks. Their front 7 is good.

USU sold out on stopping the run, didn't think Worley could beat them threw the air. We should see steady progress in the run game week to week. If we cant run the ball this week, I'll start getting a little nervous.

I hope that is true. That usu defensive front is a lot better than presumed. I felt bad for Hurd almost every time he ran the ball. As soon as he took the handoff, someone was wrapped around his legs.

Uh, OK. Another "hey guys, the sky is blue". Wow, I did not know.

Come on VN, we all know the o-line needs help and that once we get around to the SEC schedule, our struggles to run will be evident. They were evident against USU on a smaller scale. SEC talent will exacerbate the short coming and IMO will greatly hamper our passing game. Worley must get better at the deep ball so we can stretch the field so more natural holes open for our skilled players to pass through.

People have been speculating that we limited the plays called in the run game and I think that may be true to some extent. For example, I don't recall once seeing our trap play with the TE coming across the back of the line to "wham" block the backside DE and open up a cutback lane.

That said, I hope we see the O-line take a big jump forward in opening holes next week regardless of playcalling.

That makes sense to me. Maybe after the early scores we decided to hold some blocking schemes and run plays back for Oklahoma. It also could have been some check with mes to a short pass depending on how many were in the box versus run.

From what I saw it looked like all the runs were straight north and south. They hit the gaps in the middle even though there were open lanes on the outside. I'm almost convinced it was the gameplan for that to happen, because Hurd likes to take it to the outside from the video I've seen. I'm not too worried because he and Lane hit the middle hard and moved some bodies.

Run blocking comes with not only talent, but with lots of experience. Check out the Texas A&M lines and Alabama lines. Texas A&M has 1st round LT's every year it seems and so does Alabama with their interior lineman. Pass blocking techniques are simpler than the technique involved in run blocking. In pass blocking you have to keep someone from getting to point B, but run blocking requires you to actually move that defender to point B. Our run blocking will improve as the year goes on, but I would not expect 100 yard rushers in SEC play. We can still be a proficient offense, but we will have to rely more on quick passes, similar to a long handoff, and end-a-rounds, etc. Once we get more experience we will be able to run with greater success against SEC teams (I am not considering Ark St and Chatt). Also, it was FINALLY nice to see Worley actually keep a hand off and RUN. The fake isn't much of a fake unless you actually run. Nice to see. That will also keep Worley in the game more and positively affect this passing game.

when ever worley starts to throw deep to the monster receivers we have it will be no more stacking the box.

He tried but he does not have the touch so far. He may need to throw deep down the middle on post patterns and let the WRs go and get it. His long ball down the side line just isn't there.

Gotta get some on target first though. I don't think he had any deep throws that connected in the USU game. I could be wrong though, I was drunk.

Yes, there would have been. USU's MO against big conference teams is to stack the box, stuff the run, and hope for the best. We killed them on the short-mid passes and they still didn't adjust away from their game plan on D. They were all in and let the chips fall where they fall...

Yes, they were stacking the box, not only trying to make us one dimensional, but testing our line strength.
The USU coaches were using players from what other coaches left. The new coach didn't recruit as well, and it showed, but it was his first year.
GO VOLS!
