Yesterday I saw what a QB who can run can do. I saw Leak and Tebow pull one out for Fla that they would have lost big except for the QB picking up key 1st downs on scrambles, draws. etc.. Everybody saw what McFadden did when he started taking direct snaps. Russsel hurt us moving up in the pocket and then taking off.

How about White for W Va? He's been doing it all year.

Vince Young

Tee Martin (Yes, he could run the ball if he had to)

How about Nebraska's three (granted , they ran the option)
Tommie Frazier, Scott Frost, Eric Crouch?

Why couldn't UT recruit a couple like that instead of going after pure pocket passers? PUre passers are great in the NFL but you need that added threat in college ball.

Crompton looks athletic when he takes off. More than I can say for Clasuen, or Ainge.

Them two man, you can make a 30 minute comedy of just them taking off when their under pressure. They both are nothing but knees and elbows all over the place.

What? Florida did not score that many points, and they were beaten. The person responsible for that win is that guy that blocked two kicks. If that doesn't happen, it is game over for Urban.

If we are going to talk about running the ball, how about we get some solid running backs. I have been very disappointed in our rushing game this year. I prefer pocket passers. For every "running QB" you throw out there, I could throw twenty-five pocket passers back at you that were better. #1 being Peyton.

We have tried this before ... Banks, Schaeffer, and Co. I do not think Schaeffer is a better QB than Ainge, and I take Ainge back there any day. You can't name me one running quarterback that you would rather have taking your snaps than Peyton or even Shuler.

Well, that's what discussion threads are for. You have your opinion and I have mine.

No I can't name one, I can name several. I think I did in my original post. And please note you said I couldn't name one I would rather have taking snaps than Shuler or Manning. I say that under present circumstances, I'd take a running QB who is an average passer over either one of them.

BTW, if Leak and Tebow hadn't run the ball on critical possession downs in that last drive, that guy blocking those two kicks would have been academic.

I would like to see a athletic QB but they usually take longer to develope than a pure passer. With the way Fulmer's era has been it takes his recruits longer to develope and we just don't need that. Example, Tee Martin sat on the bench for two years and when he started in '98 he very inacurate with his throws until they played South Carolina.
But you never know there can be another Charlie Ward out there somewhere.:eek:k:

There are different ways to successfully move the football, and running ability is certainly a plus, but take a quick look at the top ten:
1. Ohio St--pocket passer who can run
2. Michinga--pocket passer
3. Florida--pocket passer who can run + that Tebow thing
4. USC--pocket passer
5. Arkansas--pocket passer until last night
6. Notre Dame--pocket passer
7. Rutgers--pocket passer
8. West Virginia--runner
9. LSU--pocket passer who can run
10. Louisville--pocket passer

I'm sure any team wouldn't mind having a quarterback who could move around, but I think that list shows that it isn't necessary if the guy can throw and makes good decisions.

I've heard several head coaches comment its hard to recruit a top QB prospect without a pro style offense. All these QB recruits are looking to play at the next level, and being in an offense built around a running QB doesn't offer as good of an opportunity in their eyes to play at the next level.

We shouldn't have to run.

But whoever is under center for us is going to have to because blocking is apparantley out of style.

Hmm. Never thought about that before. Makes sense
