Just sad.

Remember prior to the 1998 Draft when there was actually a Manning vs. Leaf debate?

In my mind I question how serious that debate ever really was, since my memory isn't perfect. Was it an ESPN creation, or was it legitimate?

It absolutely was a legitimate debate. I think Manning was the odds on favorite the whole time, but there were those that thought the Colts should take Leaf. In fact, I seem to remember some kind of informal poll where a majority of GMs picked Leaf.

I was obviously biased but still couldn't believe Leaf was that highly regarded.

Yup. Clash of styles.

Leaf's Rocket Arm vs Peyton's accuracy.

Manning's ''happy feet'' put off a lot of scouts at the time.

Yeah, that was my first thought when I saw the thread title. Those hyping Leaf over Manning really nailed it.

I remember seeing the special on the NFL Network about Leaf, and it was funny what one guy said (can't remember who). He said a huge red flag should have come up when they asked Leaf what he would do if he was the #1 pick overall. Manning reportedly gave a more "mature/corporate" type answer about working hard, studying film, ready to prove himself, etc., and Leaf's answer was basically go party for a week in Vegas.

Plus the stories about how much his Charger teammates hated him almost made me feel sorry for the guy, even though he did it to himself. Like how Seau nailed him in practice one day and almost the whole team cheered; and how he would ask guys if they wanted to go eat and they'd tell him they couldn't, and then they'd turn around in earshot of Leaf and go talk other teammates about going to eat.

When he was in college and trying out for the NFL his happy feet were a bad thing. Now they actually say it is a strength. Funny how that works.

Manning vs. Leaf controversy? Hmm? Not even close! Peyton was actually better. That's why he went first over Ryan. Stats later proved that after two seasons. Believe Leaf didn't last 4 seasons with the Chargers.

There most certainly a huge debate at the time. And no crap it was proven Manning was better, that's not what we're talking about.

you could almost substitute "Heath Shuler" for Ryan Leaf

I sometimes feel bad for him, but the I read all the stories with of people that have had first hand experience with him and how he is a complete jerk at all times. Unfortunately, it sounds like he's just a really crappy human being.
