The SEC fan roots for his school, of course. But he also roots for his conference, and, in an interesting, New South kind of way, his whole region. The thing historians used to call southern exceptionalism — and its first cousin on its mother's side, southern solidarity.

^^^^ I've tried to explain it on here but he puts it better.

Very good article, thanks for posting!!

Thanks for sharing. Finebaum sums up my sentiments regarding A&M very well - I can't believe I wrote that.

I don't mind the conference fandom but teams like Kentucky(can't even beat Tennessee) and now Texas A&M, annoys me. I know Tennessee has been down but regardless of winning the first BCS championship, at least they've competed throughout the years. Why Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Miss St. would brag about constantly being at the bottom of the best conference is beyond me. At least have more than one or two quality seasons in 5, 10, 15 years.... Now, A&M fans are chanting SEC and they are probably the same people who hated the SEC prior to joining. I admit, I've earned nothing as a fan. I'm not the one out on the field busting my ass and making this the best conference in the country. But at least I understand history. Tennessee may be down but I will continue to support them. I know they've been on top and I know they can be on top again. Wtf is up with the people pulling for the conference when their team has always sucked? Desperate much?

What is the point of rooting for the conference at all. I hate S-E-C chants. Root for yourself. You don't see Red Sox fans chanting "A-L-East" after Yankee victories.

Bandwagon fans, if your team sucks, cheer for the team that is having success. Sorry that just doesn't work for me. To each his own though and do whatever makes you happy.

I'm not a fan of living vicariously through our rivals' accomplishments. I guarantee that a lot of other teams' fans aren't rooting for us.
