Why is this a good move???? I don't get it-neither of them is any good. This is a clip from SI's Truth and Rumors:

Published reports have indicated that Miami Dolphins running backs coach Bobby Williams has accepted a position with Alabama, though a source said that he was not working with Alabama as of Monday. Sources also indicate that Nick Saban is moving toward hiring former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Joe Pendry and Rice offensive coordinator Major Applewhite in a dual offensive role.

He's young...maybe Saban sees a spark:

The youngest coordinator in Division I football, Major Applewhite stepped right into the job and masterminded an offensive genesis at Rice that shattered the perception of the Owls as a one-dimenssional attack and replaced it with an attack that showed versitility, creativity and an ability to score from any spot on the field at any time.
Applewhite's offense fashioned 20 scoring drives that needed less that 2:10 to reach the end zone, including 15 in less than two minutes. Eight of those 15 drives traveled 50 yards or longer. At the same time, the offense also produced four drives of 15 plays or longer which resulting in points and a fifth that ate up the last 7:20 of the game to clinch the win at UTEP. Under Applewhite's direction, the Owls produced their first season in history with players topping 1,000 yards in rushing, passing and receiving in the same year while scoring 333 points, a 92-point improvement from 2005, and matching the third-best total in school history. Quarterback Chase Clement blossomed in the new offensive attack, developing into a masterful field general who averaged over 270 yards a game of total offense while tieing the school record for TD passes (21) and completing nearly 58% of his passes.

OK. But, Applewhite is not a bad hire by any means. I consider him a low hung fruit at a good price. Get him while you can. But a Texan's OC that couldn't keep that job?

Depends on Bama, I guess. Anything is possible. Kinda makes you wonder why George Quarrels hasn't made the leap from beating up on high school teams every week, heh?

wow. don't know enough about his coaching abilities to argue against it, but sure seems to be a very bold statement indeed.

He talked about that on the Sports Animal a while back. There are alot of reasons.

If you're talking about the same interview I heard, he kinda left the door open on the subject...he talked about family and time management, etc... It sounded like he really hasn't been approached.

You must not know a lot of stuff outside of Tennessee or SEC country. Major Applewhite is a very very good offensive coordinator with a very fresh approach. In his first year, he took a Rice team that averaged 21 ppg in 2005, and had them averaging 27 ppg in 2006. 6 points doesn't sound like a lot, but it is.

Bobby Williams has made Ronnie Brown a top 10 NFL RB.

I don't know a lot about Pendry.

And I'll echo hat's thoughts on Applewhite.

Good hire! Some coaches would feel threatened by such qaulities!

Yep...thanks for duping my cut and paste from the same website a few from the top. :good!: And, Rice is certainly known for being a D-1 powerhouse. He may be terrific, but he's awefully young and has little coaching experience...doesn't seem to be a logical move if you want to bring Bama 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see...he'll certainly flourish or fail with the variety of defenses he'll face.

Hence, the co-OC move that would have him in tuteledge while he progressed, keeping the ole gold digger off the hot seat in the mean time. Besides, Bama BOT blocked Jimbo's hire at UAB so he would be available for Saban, (and also not put UAB in a position to upstage Bama with a better coach), and apparently he privately told Nicky to KHA, so it took 2 hires for the same position to equal out.

Joe Pendry's been around the NFL for about 20 years. You don't last that long in the pros if you're not good at what you do.

Point taken. But, after 20 years, you're the ex-OC of the Texans?? Not on top of his game right now.

A Saban assistant following Saban? This can't be true.
