After being away from LSU for a decade does Saban still deserve credit for the status of LSU's program? Personally, I don't think the mad-hadder is that good of a coach, just lucked into a good established program.

Saban brought LSU back from a long stretch of mediocre football. He set the stage for Miles' early success.

That said, Miles has kept that program chugging right along. He's a good recruiter, and is very creative with his playbook. He's hit or miss as a gameday coach, but he's still one of the top 10 in the country, if not top 5.

It's for sure he's not a Larry Coker after Butch Davis but as with Miami, LSU has abundant talent in their back yard.

At some point there is no longer a connection. I would say after five years recruiting squarely falls on the shoulders of the new coach and the success, or failure, of a program does as well.

I think Miles is closer to Fulmer than Saban. He can recruit (but that isn't as hard in a talent rich state with only one major university), but when all else is equal he gets out coached. His luck has usually been made by talented players, not by talented coaching.

So the answer to your question is that yes, Miles inherited a program on the rise a decade ago. But, The team is now firmly his responsibility. Personally, I don't see him winning a national championship there but due to solid recruiting he will continue to have a Fulmer like level of success, complete with a slow deterioration as the game continues to evolve.

Miles can flat out recruit and is a solid coach. I put Saban 1, Miles 2 in the s e c. That said, he's had a few head scratcher moments in his LSU career - Ole Miss a few years ago, and letting UT even be in the game 2 yrs ago w/ Simms at QB - unbelievable.

I can see the Fulmer comparison (major luck). After all, Miles won the NC with a two loss season in the modern era. Is it me or did it seem he was on the hot seat after the season opening loss to us in 05?

Sure Miles looks and acts kinda dopey but the man can coach. He takes chances and players seem to love playing for him. I like watching his teams play. You never know what he may do next.

Yeah Saban put LSU back on the map and once back in order. Kids that once defected have a place they can compete in their own state.

As they always have. Miles deserves credit for what he has done there. Saban has not recruited or coached there for 7 years.

Do you mean win another national title? I guess he does have a "Fulmer like" level of success (2 SEC titles, one undefeated, and a BCS title) already. There is only one Saban people.
