Brendon Ayanbadejo: Nick Saban, Dolphins traded me after I missed time for daughter’s birth | FOX Sports on MSN

I realize you're talking a tremendous amount of $$ players are paid and professional organizations have a lot of money on the line. However, when it comes to family, whether it's the death of a parent, spouse or child, or the birth of a child, these organizations have yet to figure out how to pay it forward. Good for these players for knowing what's important among an industry filled with super egos and the "all about me" mentality.

I'm willing to bet he was going to be traded anyway.

Nevertheless, it's kind of a DB thing to say it is expected that no practice be missed to see the birth of one's child. It's a once in a lifetime event, and I dare to say it isn't going to result in a game loss if one guy misses one practice.

Yeah, apparently there is a Mets player taking heat for missing 3 days for the birth of his child too. I think it should be like every other workplace in the sense that players (employees) need to abide by whatever the company policy is for maternity/spouse leave. It's the employee's (player) responsibility to know what the policy is of their own employer and simply abide by it. Or, the player needs to put it in his contract so there's no confusion or misgivings about it. Jmo.

And I probably should've said there are several professional sports organizations that do get it right and go to great lengths to ensure their employees can be with their family for the important events. If that was truly Saban's take on the issue, then I've lost all respect for him...and it's hard enough for me to respect a Bama coach anyway.

Personally I have a hard time with players/coaches that DON'T miss for things like that; depending on the situation of course. I know people deal with things differently, but it always seemed weird when some players or coaches wouldn't miss a game and their child was being born or a parent died.

Again, not trying to judge because everyone deals with things differently, but I would hope they don't do it out of fear of being punished for missing. It's different yes, but in the end that sport is their job and in a "regular" job it would be expected that time would be taken off.

The thing about Murphy for the Mets is that he could have legally taken until Friday under the Mets rules. It's the media ripping him. Boomer Esiason of all people, with a child with cystic fibrosis should understand family over sports.

Murphy also played in more games than any other 2nd baseman in the league, he earned the right to miss 2 games at the very beginning of the season. It's not like they're in a playoff race.

I was extremely irritated to hear the media say he should just "hire a nurse." It's his first born child. Heaven forbid the guy wanted to be there for the experience. I wish more people had their priorities straight.

Plus it's baseball. They play 162 games, and the season just started. It's not like they are fighting for a playoff spot. Missing a few games in April isn't going to sink the season.

Maybe the Mets should instead focus on why their stadium is mostly empty every game.

haha exactly. I think I saw where someone said missing the first two games of the MLB season would be like a guy missing the first 7 minutes of the 1st quarter in an NFL game.
