The last active battalion of the 9th Marine Regiment was deactivated in a ceremony at Camp Lejeune. 2/9 had been on active duty since 2007.
Before that they had been on active duty from 1917 until 1994 when they were deactivated to pay for the "Peace Dividend and Cathouse Fund" during the Clinton Occupation.

2/9 "Hell in a Helmet" now joins 1/9 "The Walking Dead" and 3/9 "Shadow Warriors" in the cold pages of history. No big deal. We have to use that money to make sure gays in Indiana can order pizza.
Before they left, though, they gave the Corps it's most recent MoH recipient, L/Cpl. Kyle Carpenter of Fox Co. who earned his medal by covering a grenade with his body to save his squad mates in Helmand Province in 2010.
Thanks 9th Marines, you deserve better.
