I've been watching the SD fires closely since my sister lives there. Fortunately, she and her home are safe although the big fire (Witch Creek) was within 5-6 miles of her house.
One political (potentially) comment I've already heard is the linking of this to Global Climate change.
The second hasn't yet arrived but because the response has been so good, the comparisons to Katrina response have begun.
Prediction: This will be broken down on race and class lines. The response was good because SD has more white and middle class residents.
Reality: Better leadership across the board from the municipal, state and federal level coupled with lessons learned from Katrina are the core reasons.
Having visited extensively, there is a much more active municipal leadership in SD and the residents cooperate in managing public resources.
How long before Al and Jesse step up?
