Hassle in Haight over McDonald's menu change

It's a fight over 50 cents, plus tax.

You used to be able to get a 390-calorie McDouble for 99 cents, said Nicholas Newhart, a 29-year-old with a Confederate flag tattooed on the back of his head. Without the Dollar Menu it now costs $1.49.

While that price increase may seem trivial, for Newhart and his colleagues it can mean the difference between eating and going hungry. Many homeless think taking away the Dollar Menu is the restaurant management's ploy to get them to go somewhere else. Management locks the bathroom door and frequently calls the cops. On top of that, Mayor Gavin Newsom and several Haight Street merchants are pushing a November ballot measure that would ban sitting or lying on public sidewalks.

I surprised there's anything less than 1.50 in San Fran, it's pretty expensive city

Not to sound callous, but I've seen two homeless people absolutely take over a place by going into the bathrooms and locking the door for long periods of time, making scenes at the ordering counter, etc.

Besides, living off of the dollar menu doesn't sound like a good thing. They need real help. Many refuse it.

SF is crawling with homeless. For years, they had very pro-homeless policies. Will be interesting to see if they get tougher.

Calculated move to get a more healthy homeless base.

Too many double cheese burgers will send you to the ER with a heart attack.

illegal aliens are given sanctuary, but homeless people are now being discriminated against?

Cry me a freakin river. The number of free services available to the homeless in San Francisco is astounding. Perhaps if these people were making use of some of those and trying to better their lot in life, they wouldn't worry so much about McDonald's dollar menu.

Besides, doesn't Wendy's have a 99-cent value menu?

What the hell is it with these private companies setting their own prices and trying to pinpoint particular customers. Crazy talk.

I'm not homeless, but if I am ever forced to start paying more than $1.08 for a McChicken, I just might burn every MD's to the ground.

I just assumed that nobody eats a sandwich called a McChicken.

I eat it when I'm drunk and need to get back home soon. They're terribly filling with mayonnaise. Gives you the clams or forces you to grasp reality... whichever comes first.
