Dontavis Sapp picked as spring's biggest SEC star - ESPN

Well at least we got a #1 spot in one poll. :)

We saw a lot of bright spots all over the SEC this spring. And things were pretty close when we asked our readers who was the league's biggest star this spring.

With more than 5,500 votes cast in our SportsNation poll, Tennessee senior linebacker Dontavis Sapp narrowly beat Georgia freshman safety Tray Matthews by grabbing 29 percent of the vote, compared to Matthews' 28 percent.

Sapp didn't enter the spring with a lot of experience (he has only made two career starts), but he really impressed his new coaching staff. With the Vols moving back to a 4-3 defensive scheme, Sapp was Tennessee's most consistent defender this spring. And that was really important to this team because Curt Maggit was out for the spring, recovering from his ACL injury from the fall. Sapp might have locked up a starting spot.

Good for Sapp. Glad something about our defense seems to be on the rise. Compared to last season, we need it.

THIS. No one outside of the South gives two rips about college football in May. I'm pretty sure it was UT fans voting for this.

But not to disrespect the effort and play of Sapp right? After all the kid brought it hard this Spring....give credit to D. Sapp still :eek:k:

Sure, he did great. But if you think anyone but UT fans voted for him, you're crazy. Plus, it really doesn't mean squat since he will have to prove it on the field. No one will remember this come August.

The first thing CBJ probably told him when getting on campus was a reminder of his last trip to Neyland & how that UC rb pancaked him en route to about a 65yd TD. Maybe lit a fire? :) JK, Sapp was young and the RB was a beast ... in NFL now iirc.

Glad to see this kid work his way into being a contributor. We need him at LB.
