Looking for a little info on Sat. Radio. My job is relocating me to ACC country (NC). I currently enjoy living in God's Country, but will be leaving the friendly confines of TN, and the biggest downers are 1) longer drive on Saturdays and 2) losing radio coverage of my Vols. So, looking to purchase sat. radio for my vehicle and looking for advice. UT's site doesn't clarify what network (Sirius or XM) carries the Vols...but XM does show SEC coverage. Couple of questions before I jump in...XM or Sirius (from what I've seen, there is only one radio that covers both, but it is pricier than the others), how does the FM Modulators in the units perform, and does anyone know if the XM coverage will change to Sirius? Any advice or info is greatly appreciate.

I'm in a similar situation to you as far as Vols coverage and this is a very easy decision. Vols coverage - along with the rest of the SEC is on XM.

I wouldn't spend the money on the radio that picks up both. Since the merger, a good deal of the content on XM and Sirius is the same with a few exceptions . . . I think they still have a few few specialty music channels that they don't share. XM gives you MLB and college sports. Sirius has the NFL, NASCAR and Howard Stern. If you want everything, just get XM and buy the "Best of Sirius" package. All the pricing is at xmradio.com and I think you'll find that it's relatively cheap for what you get.

I've had XM radios hard wired into a vehicle and I've used the FM modulator on others. There's not much of a difference in signal quality except when an FM signal starts to bleed in, in which case you just switch frequencies which is very easy to do.

Thanks, GA...I thought that would be the case concerning XM, but the UT site just says TBA for sat. coverage...wasn't sure if the merger would change the coverage. Just don't see myself listening to any ACC junk, and want to have good coverage while driving to or from the game once I get outta range...and wanted to pick up BBall games if I can't get to a computer or TV. I've used FM Mods before, with sketchy results, but that was a few years ago.

a lot of the radios you can just plug into an ipod jack that many cars now have if you don't want to use the FM mod.

One vehicle has the jack (but the volume is low), one doesn't...I may put the mod in one and try the jack in the other.

Thanks!

I'm one of the fortunate folks that has an FM mod version of Sirius that is no longer available because the FM transmitter was too strong. Basically, I'm my own little radio station. A friend of mine had the same model and used it at home - he could pick up the signal a block from his house if he tuned his car to the same signal! Basically his neighbors were treated to lots of Howard Stern if they happened to hit the right frequency.

OBTW - Satellite radio rocks.

Pretty much everything has been covered, but I'd just like to second GA's thoughts. I have XM in my car, my wife has Sirius. The SEC channels are all you need, although you are probably going to get the home team broadcast for every game.

In general, I like XM better than Sirius anyway. The selection seems broader and it is much better for college sports. The only advantage Sirius has (or at least had, I haven't checked very recently) is the NFL. If getting pro games is important to you, you need to check out the packages and see what is available, but it might be a reason to combine.

Good info, guys. Thanks. Don't do NFL much, 'cept the Colts.

Talk radio and the Vols are pretty much it. I think I've settled on the radio, now just need to go for it.

I think Sirius gets the whole package as XM is only a select few stations. I have XM on my 2010 Chevy Malibu.

There is an app called WunderRadio (which is a bit pricey as apps go) that picks up some stations that broadcast the Vol Network. I listened to a few basketball games this way when I was working this past winter.

I Heart Radio is a free app that I've used to listen to games, Vol Calls, etc on WLAC. They have stations across the country.
