NBC is rerunning the very first SNL episode at 11:30 tonight. George Carlin hosts (he admitted to having been high on cocaine when this aired). Andy Kaufman does the weird Mighty Mouse thing. It probably won't be as funny as it's been remembered, but if nothing else it's a historic TV event.

I accidentally posted this in Movies and Music first. Sorry for posting twice, but I thought it would be seen in the Pub... maybe not before it airs in the other forum.

I was just watching the Valentine special so thanks for posting this.
SNL Clip shows that include the new cast make it easy to identify Michael Che as the worst cast member in 40 years.
Btw, I really like the current cast of women. Every one of them brings something solid. I also really like Taran Killam.

The Triple Track razor blade. Funny that they made fun of a three blade razor right after the two bladed version came out. What's the most now? Five?

I watched it. Very different than I remembered. I had forgot how much standup Carlin did and how little background laughing some of the sketches had.

Cant wait to see the anniversary special tonite

It seemed like the bits were much shorter and there were many more of them. It looked like SCTV at times. Also two musical guests plus Paul Simon was a third, but just to promote the following week's show.

It's like people didn't know how to react at times. Also, a lot of classic moments from those early shows, but a lot of misses as well.

And it's easy to forget how different it was from just about everything else on TV. There were 3 stations and no topical humor.

SNL's very first drug joke was when George Carlin was talking about NFL hash marks. I bet that the censor was sweating bullets and had their finger on the dump button resisting the urge to press it.

I thought that Weekend Update was still pretty funny. Too bad it looks like the original tape for that segment was damaged, but at least it was only for a few seconds.

Saw it last night... I didn't understand the skit with the guy in front of the old timey record player & then singing that one verse 3 times.

I saw the very first original broadcast when it was aired on NBC in 1975. The record player skit was Andy Kaufman's idea of being different & funny. George Carlin didn't seem very funny at all & I did wonder why that was. It was good to see the original cast once again last night. There's a couple of SNL original cast members that have passed away being that this was a 40 year tribute to the show.

I was in 6th grade and was eating it up. My parents thought it was a disaster at first.

Saturday night at the time was dominated by CBS with All in the Family, (insert various shows), Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart Show, Carol Burnette Show. SNL was so different, so raw compared to this line up.

I wasn't really old enough to start getting it until the early to mid 80s...Which was exactly when Eddie Murphy showed up. I was pretty much ruined.

I saw documentary on Andy Kaufman. you guys know he had an alter ego character. he would actually use this alter ego character and open for Andy. he got so deep in his character, he would deny the he played this character. one night at a bar he was with some other comedians and a popular Mexican comedian (at the time) ask him over and over if he and the other character were the same guy.

Andy kept denying until the Mexican comedian pushed him up to a wall and demanded the truth or he would kick Andy's butt. Andy finally admitted he played that character. it was the only time Andy ever admitted. I can't remember the name of the alter ego character.

Weird to think how differently Saturday nights were generally spent across the population then and how they are now.
