Offense abused by the Defense, lost 3 fumbles and 2 int's, couldn't run or pass effectively. Looks like Colquitt is best offensive weapon again this year.

Vol Defense Gaines Bragging Rights After Saturday Scrimmage
Fulmer: "Defense Set the Tempo"

FULMER INTERVIEW WITH BOB KESLING | SANDERS INTERVIEW
Tennessee's first scrimmage came and went Saturday and, for the offense, it was good riddance.
Omar Gaither led a big day by the Volunteer defense with three tackles behind the line of scrimmage and Jason Allen added a pair of fumble recoveries during the 90-play workout at Haslam Field. UT defenders allowed only one TD, a 65-yard scoring toss from Brent Schaeffer to Robert Meachem.
"I'm glad to get the first scrimmage behind us because they say the most improvement you should make is between the first and second scrimmage and between the first and second game," head coach Phillip Fulmer. "We've certainly got a lot of that to do offensively.
"Really for the entire scrimmage, the defense just set the tempo. The offense just kept finding ways to shoot itself in the foot."
C.J. Leak and Rick Clausen each took a series of snaps to open the exhibition before UT coaches turned things over primarily to Schaeffer and fellow first-year quarterback Erik Ainge.
"We gave Rick and C.J. the first series and then we really felt like we had to find out what those freshmen could do and where they are. It was about like freshmen playing their first college scrimmage and it was really not very good.
"But they'll learn from it and be able to build on that. Wednesday is our next big test and, hopefully, we will take a very good step forward offensively."
Fulmer noted a rushing spark again came from tailback David Yancey, who carried six times for 22 yards. Meachem was the offensive sparkler, gaining 104 receiving yards on only three catches. But consistency was absent for the entire offensive unit.
"One of our game maxims is when things don't go well you put on more steam, and we did not do that today offensively to say the least."
Jonathan Wade and Roshaun Fellows picked off interceptions during the scrimmage, while Parys Haralson and Turk McBride added one sack apiece. Corey Campbell chipped in a fumble recovery.
Saturday's scrimmage ended a streak of eight consecutive practice dates to start the preseason. The Vols return to the field Monday with a pair of workouts, their last day of two-a-days.
Starting Lineups
The Vols started offensively with Michael Munoz and Albert Toeaina at the tackles, Cody Douglas and Rob Smith at the guards and Jason Respert at center; C.J. Leak started at quarterback, with Gerald Riggs Jr. at tailback and Cory Anderson at fullback; the receivers were Chris Hannon and Tony Brown with Justin Reed at tight end.
On defense, Parys Haralson and Karlton Neal started at the ends, with Justin Harrell and Jesse Mahelona at the tackles; linebackers were Kevin Burnett, Kevin Simon and Jason Mitchell; cornerbacks consisted of Jason Allen and Jonathan Wade, with Brandon Johnson and Corey Campbell at the safeties.

TNVOLS1 what do you think about that lineup and how it compates to what we are going to see on opening day. Obviously you could debate the receivers but other than that the only thing that I think may be different is Heffney instead of Wade.

I would say that it will be the starting Defense except for Hefney in place of Wade.

Looks like all my boy Yancey has to do is knock a little rust off.

Clausen actually had more yards than Leak.

Defense is always ahead of the Offense, which is good.

Riggs got the start over Houston.

Schaeffer continues to grow.

Defense remains consistent.

Yancy and Larkin had the most yards and they do not get any credit Riggs was in the same boat as Davis and Houston.

Sounds like CPF needs to bring in somebody else's offense for our defense to practice against.
