The Saudi ties to the Arab soldiers fighting alongside the Afghans against the USSR... yep. Before they morphed into al-queeda and the Taliban.
The Saudi's support that faction in Iraq as a proxy army against the Shiites in Iraq. The Saudis and Iranians loathe each other.

Don't be silly. Everyone knows Obama started this.![]()
Hasn't that Shiite versus Sunni rift been going on for centuries though? As I understand it the Saudis are Sunni as well aren't they, at least the majority?
Saudis and most Arabian peninsula dwellers are Sunni. Iran is Shiite. Iraq is split.
The Shiites are a majority in Iraq, somewhere around 60% I think, the other 40% is Sunni. The Sunnis are also split between Kurds and Arabs, who aren't that lovey dovey either.
This is not a surprise. I'll give anyone two guess what nationality the majority of the 911 hijackers were.
The muslim world is completely screwed up right now. Even in "moderate" Egypt where they drink alcohol the average muslim has some pretty radical worldviews.
