“It was about two weeks ago – the last little bit of March. They called one of my high school coaches and gave me an offer,” Lukas told Volquest. “I was just talking ball with coach [Derrick] Ansley. He said they like my athletic ability at defensive back and see me as a fit in the program.” Tennessee quarterback coach Chris Weinke recruits that area of South Carolina, but it was Ansley who did all the talking with members of Lukus’s high school staff, who is currently without a head coach. “They [UT] started following me on social media the day before they offered, so our contact hasn’t been for very long,” Lukus said. “Coach Ansley said he wants to get me on campus as soon as the coronavirus stuff passes.” At cornerback, Lukus plays fast and physical – showing good ball skills. The athlete will lineup at receiver when the team is in a pinch, and returns punts and kickoffs. One area for improvement would be opening his hips, according to the prospect.
“There’s a lot of schools who are talking to me right now,” the cornerback said. “Virginia Tech is coming the hardest right now, if I had to say. Clemson is talking with me too but hasn’t offered me yet.”Lukus has 13 offers as of now, with Tennessee being one of the latest. Other programs in the mix from around the SEC include Florida, LSU, Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina. The ACC is also well represented with Duke, North Carolina and Georgia Tech extending offers. The rising junior admitted he didn’t know a whole lot about the Tennessee football program but did say he has noticed the passion of the fanbase. “I know the fans are crazy and all that, but in a good way,” the Palmetto State native said. “When I post stuff on social media, they go crazy. Some of my friends who have been offered by Tennessee even said the fans are quick with the edits on Twitter.”
Like many recruits during this time, the prospect was planning on visiting other schools during the period – but that’s on hold due to COVID-19. “When I’m looking at where I might play, there definitely needs to be a strong relationship between me and the coaches. We have to gel,” Lukus said. “It needs to be the same with me and the class coming in because we are going to be teammates. “There has to be a bond that can create a positive playing atmosphere when I get there.” Lukus, who soon plans to visit Rocky Top for the first time, will make his final call before his senior campaign.
