Not surprising but talk about a tough job. uscjr is located squarely in the ACC footprint. Any top player in their state is just as likely to go to Clemson as they are SC unless theyre in Columbia. Equally likely to leave the state for UNC, Duke, even Tennessee (JJJ is an example). They really have no footprint or marketability outside of sc. Fogler, Odum, Horn and now Martin have won other programs but failed at scjr.

It is probably the second-hardest job in the SEC, behind Miss St.

Martin probably did as well as you possibly could there. They weren't terrible this year. Kinda surprising
Even though South Carolina I think is a difficult job, you gotta make the tournament more than once in 10 years, right? I still am a little surprised though, because discounting the COVID year he's been .500 or better in SEC play 3 years in a row and 5 of the last 6 seasons. They had few bad losses this year in conference play. They lost 9 SEC games, and 7 of those were to Auburn, UT, Arkansas, Kentucky, or Alabama.

It's actually kinda crazy that he had more success at K State than South Carolina. And yet, still, he's one of South Carolina's best coaches in their history. Took them to their only Final Four.

The other crazy thing about SC; most of their hires over the pats 40 years were successful at their previous school, but did not fare well at SC. Makes me think SC might just be a tough job. Even Frank McGuire was pretty average there outside of 6 year run.

I vote Miss State and South Carolina as the toughest SEC basketball jobs.

You know the reason Frank Martin isn't still at K-State (or at the very least stayed there longer)? John Currie.

I’d say Ole Miss (they once promoted a HBC to assistant freshman football coach) & scjr as the two toughest jobs. Miss St is closer to Jackson, the only real recruiting base in the state, than Ole Miss. Ole Miss can’t compete in Memphis recruiting with Memphis, Tennessee, etc.

Who does South Carolina go after to replace Martin?
Looks like most of the early speculation is focused on Oklahoma State coach and SCar alum Mike Boynton. Although he does have a buyout north of $13 million, which might make it tough for Ray Tanner. Sean Miller’s name has been thrown around, which for South Carolina would be a grand slam hire. Although apparently there’s some pushback from some connected to the university because of how Miller’s time at Arizona ended.

I agree that Ole Miss is the toughest. Johnny Neumann (Newmann) is the only “star” they have had in my memory. Miss St. has some history and tradition with Basketball success that many younger folks don’t remember. GA has no real tradition outside the Hugh Durham years , couldn’t keep Tubby Smith around, land have the absolute worst basketball facilities in the SEC.

Were you in a coma while Elston Turner was an Ole Miss Rebel?

Ole Miss had Marshall Henderson and, as already mentioned, Elston Turner

They should just promote their women’s basketball coach to co-coach of both men’s and women’s. 😂

Now for the second part if you want to wait in the library and connect to the internet on your laptop. Text him zoom ID and apologize login sorry that coughing made me worried ai have Covid and didn't want to risk passing to you. Frank you ate fired.
