It'll be interesting to see how Coach Martin fills out the rest of the nonconference slate. The safe route is to play a sub 200 RPI opponent in every remaining opening. Also, I really hope they do some balancing in creating the matchups in the Big East-SEC series. Just like, for example, Providence has no business playing Kentucky, Tennessee certainly shouldn't draw any better than the 8th or 9th best Big East participant.

I'd load the schedule with cupcakes. They're going to be playing their first games under a new coach with a very different system. The best way to acclimate is to play real games. And the best kind of real games to play under those circumstances are ones against teams that have no chance to beat you. I'd schedule a bunch of Division II teams if they didn't count against us.

Basketball being my first love, and having been a bit spoiled the past 6 years with UT basketball (last year's meltdown not withstanding and way too young for Ernie and Bernie, don't remember Devoe years), I'm really interested to see what this team looks like.

I'm betting Martin will go for the cupcake schedule you're predicting. While we're rebuilding, it doesn't make sense to get humiliated on TV any more frequently than necessary. A trip to the NIT would be a success in my book.

They've already got the trip to Maui, road games at Memphis, Charleston, and Oakland plus the home game with UCONN and a Big East-SEC game at TBA. That's more than enough for this roster. I'd be making a lot of calls to the Maryland-Eastern Shores and Longwoods of the world.

I have to agree with you, Hat. It will be interesting to see how this team plays next year, although my hopes are doubtful.

That's like trading unc for Buffalo just because we are rebuilding.

I liked the concept of playing some of the in state programs. Tech, MTSU, UTM or the like would be fine for me.

Not really. UT hoops will still have plenty of meat on their nonconference plate. The same can't be said for their football counterparts.

e t s u would be a good team to play. it would never happen, but i would love to see a 2 year home and home series. i'm only about 25 miles away from state.

I like keeping the money in-state. ETSU, TSU, UTChatt..help out the smaller schools.

It will be interesting to see Martin's approach. One thing I liked about Tennessee's last coach was his willingness to play tough competition and play good RPI games.

Won't be able to tell a great deal about Martin's approach til '12-'13. UT had enough prior scheduling commitments in '11-12 that he can't really do much one way or another.

Outside of the current commitments this year, UT only played in-state opponents, USC, and Charlotte last year. That was challenging enough. The strength of schedule should still be one of the top in the country. I think scheduling a few lower tier teams is not only the safe route, but also the smart route. When are these dates finalized and announced?

I'm not trying to kiss Pearl's butt here, but it has been nice the past few years not really worrying whether or not we would make the dance. Still, he held sort of a 'take all comers' approach and persevered, even though he could have scheduled cupcakes most years and still made it. I feel good about the hire, but worry about the next couple of seasons. Memories of years of absence from the tourney iin previous regimes makes me a little worried - just bad memories. Either way, rock on, Cuonzo. Make your mark.

True.

Do you know what contracts Tennessee is in for OOC games for the 2012-2013 season?

Memphis and a road game in the Big East-SEC are the only two that come to mind. I'm sure they are probably in an exempt event.

The contract with Oakland is a 3 year contract. The Vols will host them in 2012-13.

I think we all got spoiled with making good runs in the NCAA tourament. Now we have to swallow some pride and take an NIT birth

Nothing is a sure thing... I would be surprised and somewhat scared of the future if we didn't make the NIT at the least this season.

he'll schedule cupcakes galore, then the basketball geniuses will be like "see, just like jerry green, a similar regular season record as pearl. now ignore the postseason results. cbi! cbi! cbi!"
