Schiano's Idea on Replacing Kickoff's

First of all, I've never sat in the room with a paralyzed player, so I'm not about to call the guy stupid.

Second, I kind of like the idea in general, although it would never happen. I think it would be exciting, especially late in the game.

If you're punting from your own 30 you're actually punting from about the 15 yard line on your own side of the field. So it would give the opposing team about an extra 15-20 yards or so.

This will never get passed.

I really don't see that helping all that much. Guys still get blasted on punt returns. Career ending and even life altering injuries can happen on any play of the game. I understand what caused him to think it up, but it would never pass.

the idea of giving the scoring team the ball again, even in a 4th and 15 from the 30, seems a bit unfair. especially late in the game

How about you tell your guys to tackle head-up? I only spent a few years playing but always remember some coach in the background yelling, "HEAD UP!". I feel sorry for the kid, I do, but the game is not at fault here.

Injuries can happen on any play. And like mentioned, keep your head up.

While the injury could have been prevented if he had tackled with his head up, I am not sure how I feel about removing kickoffs from the game. I also cannot imagine that punts are that much safer.

This would make the game much less enjoyable to me. Of course that's all I'm thinking about is what would make the game better for the fan. I hope LeGrand continus to get better and I'm truly sorry he paid a steep price to play the game he and I both love. Please let this rule change fall on deaf ears.

As you are aware, You are taught from middle school and I'm sure pop Warner football (if that's what it's called) to not lead with ur head, to keep it up. Once again I hope Eric continus to get better. My heart goes out to him, his teammates, and his family.

Every team I was ever on from the time I was 5 up until college ball we spent at least 10-15 minutes a day working on how to tackle the right way. It was almost never even half speed, and if you didn't do it well enough the coaches wouldn't let you practice in full contact drills.

We virtually never had someone tackle the wrong way.

I can at least see some potential benefits of the change to the traditional kickoff, even though I'd personally rather not see it implemented. The idea for replacing onside kicks with an offensive play just seems silly to me. Are there enough serious injuries on onside kicks to warrant even looking at a rule change? I can't recall a single devastating injury ever happening on an onside kick.

I'm pretty skeptical about the level of difference in danger between a kickoff and a punt...

I had planned on making a Schiavo reference. Glad I went back and read the OP...

I think the main idea behind it is that the tacklers have about 30-40 yards to get to top speed unimpeded, whereas on punts even the gunners get impeded and slowed down.

I'd say based on that alone that punts really are safer.

I'd like to see some statistical data showing that there are significantly more serious injuries during kickoffs as the same number of punts.

I don't think this is based as much on frequency of injuries as it is velocity at the point of collision

As in teri?

And yes. I had written something about her, posted it, read the OP, then immediately deleted it.

It's tastelessness given the subject matter outweighed the humor

I absolutely feel for the guy, but this is about as knee-jerk as you can get and is one of the most unfair things that could be implemented. I would venture to guess that there have been more paralyzing injuries when it is Offense vs. Defense than it has on ST's.

And you asked what the difference is between an onside kick and a 4th and 15? There is a huge difference. The chances of getting a 4th and 15 when the offense just scored and the defense is tired are much greater than getting lucky and getting an onside kick.

This is possibly one of the most unfair rule changes that could be implemented.

Do away with the wedge (which they've all but done) and you lower the risk of injury by a whole lot.

KO's are dangerous. It's a shame people get hurt but there are thousands of KO's a year and once every what 8 to 10 years something like this happens and everyone wants to change the rules.

It's a knee jerk response.

Probably should go back to kicking off from the 35 yard line. Or even move it up to the 40 if they're that worried about it
