Alright, folks. We're going to try something new around here. I thought it would be neat to begin a new weekly tradition here at the politics forum called "Scholar of the Week."

Each week, I'm going to select a member -- someone who contributes regularly to the discussions on this forum -- to field questions from his/her fellow posters. In keeping with the theme of this forum, the questions should obviously be of a political, religious and/or philosophical bent. Questions might range from, "Lefty vs Righty" or "Do you believe in absolute truth?" to "Will Jesus return in our lifetime?" Humor is welcome, but personal attacks disguised as humor will not be tolerated.

Ultimately, this is supposed to be a fun way of getting to know each other better. Feel free to leave comments, but again, please be respectful and don't make this a forum for argument and debate. If you wish to debate any of the points raised by the Scholar of the Week in his/her thread, please begin a new thread.

Our first Scholar of the Week was going to be OWB, who has bravely been volunteered by me to be our guinea pig for this experiment. Unknown at the time I did not know that OWB could participate. Lexvol will be our first up.

And I'll start him off with these questions:

Lexvol, who is your favorite writer?

What is your favorite book?

What have you learned from your experiences here at Volnation?

It often depends on if I am reading and what I am reading at the time. I like Candide, All the Kings Men, and the Great Divorce. Right now I have to give my favorite writer award to Cormac McCarthy

My favorite novel is probably Suttree. Interestingly enough, the Cohen Brothers are doing a movie based on one of McCarthy's more recent novels called "No Country for Old Men".

The Volnation is the first and only real "internet community" that I have ever been involved with. Until the Nation, the notion of meeting people on line and having consistent discussion was something I never thought I would be interested in. Now, it is something that I look forward to (most of the time anyway).

What is your connection as a Vol fan? I mean how did you become a fan of the Vols?

It is a family connection. I have had a couple of relatives that played for the Vols on both sides of my family.

....another tidbit about Lex is that his favorite game is King of the Dutch Oven(not a personal attack just a fact).

I'd say based on his input into the Golf Thread his favorite game outside of Tennessee Football is golf.

Incidentally I killed my wife's annoying cat using my flawless dutch oven skills.

My dad told me he was staying at his cousin's house with 4 or 5 kids sleeping in the bed (late 1930's). The oldest said on the count of 3 he was going to spit up into the air and see who it landed on. When he said three, the other kids all pulled the blanket over their heads falling right into his trap...:)

I would say that I am fiscally conservative, but I don't think that morality can be legislated. I struggle with people on the right that are too evangelical and I struggle with people on the left who don't realize that redistribution of wealth requires the same moral judgement that they claim to despise.

It is my life, my body, and my money. I should have the ability to choose what I do with all three.

What is one thing that you believe is untrue but you believe has the
likelihood of actually being true and why?

I have always thought, (and still do) that the idea of a world wide shadow government which secretly controls our future is untrue or unlikely, but sometimes in the deep recesses I think about what credit cards and national ids, and wonder if we may be approaching an end of the world as we know it, or entering a time when we could actually find the antichrist. I know it sounds ridiculous. Maybe all the late night George Norey is getting to me.

Wow I feel that way sometimes too!

Lex, was that you that said you went to seminary but didn't become a pastor? If so what took place to lead from that direction?
