on ESPN: SEC weighs tweaking men's basketball format - ESPN

SANDESTIN, Fla. -- The Southeastern Conference is considering tweaking its men's basketball format.

The league is looking at possibly scrapping its divisions and putting all 12 teams together for the regular season. It also might keep the divisions and seed the teams Nos. 1 through 12 for the postseason tournament.

Conference commissioner Mike Slive says the options will be discussed during the league's annual spring meetings this week.

Several coaches and athletic directors questioned the SEC's current format last season. The Eastern Division dominated the West in 2010, going a combined 27-9 against the West in the regular season, and placed three teams in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Five of those regular-season wins came against lowly Georgia.

Definitely need this. 5 out of the top 6 teams next season will probably reside in the eastern division.

As long as the teams are seeded 1-12 or whatever for the SECT. That would be grrreeeaaaat.

Hmmm. I thought "lowly" Georgia was in the East division. According to the Associated Press, they're in the West division. Either the AP is nuts  or everyone else is.

Keep the divisions for the regular season. Without divisions, the schedule would not be balanced - how would you decide who everybody plays twice? Give byes to both division winners and the next two teams, so you can finish 3rd and get a bye but not 4th. Seed the teams with the byes 1-4, so the top team is on the same side as the 4th-best team with a bye. Then, seed everybody else 5-12.

I think it was just very poorly worded. I think they meant 5 of the West's 9 wins vs the East were over UGA.

not a big fan of this idea. not sure how it'd work. right now the east division plays every team twice, and each west team once and vice versa. not sure how'd they'd restructure that.

Oh wow Slive might actually do something useful? I like this idea though. The seeding last season didn't make much sense

Solid.

In the ACC there are no divisions in basketball but you play the teams in your football division twice and the others once. The SEC should adopt a similar, if not identical, philosophy.

How were the schedules "balanced" last year with the West being so weak? Huh?

We don't need divisions in the regular season. You just rotate who people play twice each year.

Divisions are the nature of the beast. You can't complain about having to play Florida and Alabama every year in football.

I'll be damned if we stop playing UK, UF, and Vandy twice a year. Keep the divisions and schedules as is yet eliminate divisional seedings.

The SEC should keep the football divisions and continue the regular season schedule rotation that is currently in place. Come SEC tournament time the teams should be seeded according to their SEC W-L record. The top four teams should play a mini-tournament to decide who wants to play for the SEC tournament title the least, meaning who wants to avoid getting worn down in the SEC Tourney (a la Kentucky this year), and resting for the NCAA Championship. These games should be held on a playground with a chain link fence around it and be scheduled for 10:30 in the AM on the first day of conference tournament play.

Tennessee should be given a -5 point spot in the first game since they are my favorite team and need to rest the most to make the furthest run in the NCAA Tourney.

I will be their to preside over the results, issue technicals when necessary, and tell Cousins (or whomever takes the poisition of biggest child on Kentucky's squad in that respective year) to quit whining like a girl and flaring his nostrils like Pete's Dragon...
