This award historically has gone to a shot blocking post player with the occasional ball hawking guard in the ZZZ mode. Any of these type of awards are a bit of a popularity contest as it’s not based on hard data to determine the winner. What’s your thoughts on ZZZ or Mashack winning this season? Both guys are excellent defensively, but to me I would lean towards Mashack being more valuable with his ability to guard 1-4. I find myself rewinding the dvr several times each game to rewatch an impressive play and of late I’m backing it up to rewatch a fantastic Mashack play on defense.

Mashack would get my vote. While I'm obviously biased, I'd also put Vesco, ZZ and Aidoo on the first team all-SEC defense team. It's mind boggling what elite defenders we have.

I think Zakai and Mashack are the two best defenders in the conference and deserve the award, but as you said it’s a popularity contest in many ways and Mashack has unfortunately spent the majority of his career flying under the national radar.

He didn’t even make the Top 20 shortlist for national defender of the year last season, only ZZ did, and Mashack completely locked up Brandon Miller on national TV and was one of the only players able to do that.

It’s hard to judge this far out. Maybe ZZ will have a chance to win.

Mashack is the best defender in America. I love watching him guard the ball.

Mashack is the best perimeter defender in college basketball. Whether he gets credit for is to be seen.

He's the best I've seen for a long time, and the fact that he can guard 1-4 makes it even more impressive. The problem he'll have winning any awards (other than perhaps 6th man) is that he isn't a starter and doesn't play a ton of minutes, so many drive-by media types, those who are mostly responsible for voting on these awards, probably have little idea who he is at this point.

Aidoo and Awaka play a big role in how well the guards defend. I was watching an episode of Gils arena and Gil(bert Arenas) Baron Davis and Brandon Miller were talking about how much having a monster in the paint changed how easy it was for guards to be 'elite' perimeter defenders when there was someone down low someone didnt want to go see. Shaq was never a big **** blocker after leaving orlando and getting bigger, but no one wanted to go in that paint so if youre on the perimeter you can take chances at that ball because they are a lot kess likely to blow by.

That is an extreme example but it applies anytime you have a solid defensive big man down low.. They spoke on how a lot of people that folks thought were elite one on one defenders were really products of team defense. Look at Jamal Murray with the hawks they got him because he was an elite perimeter defender but in Atl he has not been. Barnes teams are great at team defense so the results are partially the individuals but more the unit. If that makes sense. Not knocking these guys because its 80% being willing. But Santi is not a great defensive player on most other teams but is in the top of the SEC in steals every year. The whole is greater than the parts. The parts are good the team is great.

This is why I think we should be the favorite for the SEC this year. We put mashack/zz on the best perimeter player and let Aidoo roam the paint to clean up any drives to the rim. Oh and also we can score with the best of em

This is why he should be getting jjj‘s minutes, he will fill the stat sheet more and even score more points(wont take much) than jjj.
Nah, check out who is 9th in the SEC on the rebounds list and 11th on the rpg list.

Mashack's outstanding defense doesn't necessarily show up in stats. He's an incredible on ball defender, and should be in consideration for defensive POY but unfortunately many people just look at stats.
