The SEC is 5-7 against other Power 5 programs so far this year.*
That's pretty miserable.
Making it even worse, none of the wins is against a ranked team; only one of those wins is against a team with a winning record. And three of the losses are to unranked teams.
So if the Vols find some way to scrape out 10-2 and get passed over for some other conference's 10-2 team, blame the perceived weakness of our conference. Blame folks like poll voters and CFP committee members not respecting the conference as the best in college football the way they have most of the past two decades.
This, friends, is why folks who think strategically always cheer for the SEC team to win in out-of-conference games. Not because we like Bama or LSU or UGa (okay, I kinda do like LSU when we're not playing them), but because the conference being strong helps us.
I know, some here don't get that. They never will. They can't see beyond the hatred to objective self-interest. Ah well.
Go Vols!
* The SEC out of conference vs P5 slate thus far in 2023:
MO win over unranked Kansas State (4-2) <-- "best" SEC OOC win to date
Ole Miss win over unranked Ga Tech (3-3)
Auburn win over unranked Cal (3-4)
Vols win over unranked Virginia (1-5)
Miss St win over unranked Arizona (1-5)
LSU loss to #4 FSU (6-0)
Bama loss to #8 Texas (5-1)
USCe loss to #10 UNC (6-0)
FL loss to #14 Utah (5-1)
A&M loss to unranked Miami (4-2)
Arky loss to unranked BYU (4-2)
Vandy loss to unranked Wake Forest (3-3)
I agree with the assertion that the conference is down this year, particularly compared to recent years. However, I do think there needs to be some context added to the results listed(and a correction in regards to Arizona). The SEC is 5-7 against other Power 5 programs so far this year.*
