Nick Saban will be saying to hell with this i'm retiringView attachment 512395
He'd never admit this publicly, but I think deep down Saban actually despises lots of aspects of modern college football. Spread offenses, fast-paced offenses, players opting out of bowl games, targeting rules and how they are enforced, how certain fouls like DPI and defensive holding are enforced, and most recently NIL and the transfer portal.

His real genius is that he's found ways to adapt to those changes and still excel, even though he personally hates the changes. Not many people are willing and/or able to do that, not just in football but in any walk of life. Saban may be many things, but stubborn is not one of them.

The question now becomes how much longer does he want to keep putting up with it. He's done an incredible job at putting up with it over the years, but everybody has a limit, and he's 71 years old. Roy Williams admitted himself on a podcast that he actually didn't really want to retire, but the game was changing in ways that he grew tired of, and he'd already had a long and storied career, so he just said "peace out." Would be curious to hear @bamawriter on this.

Personally i think he's going to retire out of left field if Alabama putters around and loses to Ole Miss knocking them into a bowl game like the ReliaQuest and Taxslayer Gator Bowl. I think he would tell the team before the Auburn game that their bowl game will be his last game as head coach of Alabama. This would leak to ESPN and CBS and they would make a huge production out of it.

Even if he's really tired, I'm not sure he'd go out like that. I bet he thinks he's got at least one more SEC title or CFP appearance in him, and he might retire after that.

I bet nobody on the team would opt out if they knew it was Nick's last game as head coach at Alabama

His guaranteed money is hard to turn down. He will fire all his staff and regroup. You can't be far off the mark with that many top players, best QB, best defensive linemen, ect.

Man that was delivered with all the love that only a bunch of Barn homers could deliver. That was rough! LOLOL - I will admit shedding a few tears during that one - granted they were due to an inability to contain my uncontrollable laughter.

The length of that contract is to head off negative recruiting about an imminent retirement. There's no way he stays until the very end of it; he'll be 79.

That's what killed Alabama with Bear Bryant from 1980-1982 Vince Dooley,Johnny Majors,Pat Dye and Bobby Bowden went into recruiting asking recruits if they thought Bear Bryant would be their head football coach during their Senior season.

Yeah, when he goes it's gonna be big. I just don't see him retiring and walking away. He's way too vain and wants all those records to himself.

A lot of Bammers will tell you he's sticking around until he passes Bryant for the most titles at Alabama, and they are probably on to something there. He's already got the most all time, yet here he is still coaching.

If he sticks around he might be as old as Joe Paterno was when he retired-was fired. Joepa was 84 when he left coaching Penn State. Amos Alonzo Stagg was also 84 when he finally retired as head coach of Pacific.

Thinking about how much of a control freak Saban is, I suspect there are plans for when/how to retire. I think it follows a last Natty, but at this point not sure he'll get it. Heupel, Kelly and Smart are making it a lot tougher. Texas may eventually be "back." No one knows is going to happen at OU and aTm is, well, aTm.

There are rumors about team chemistry. Seemed obvious there are problems this season. Did he back off discipline thinking with the talent he had it was a done deal? If he has, it will be tough to reinstate I think.

Eh. He can turn over that team super quick. He will have at least 10 guys go to the NFL. Probably that many transfer out, at least that many finish out their playing time. And Saban has about half a roster worth of free slots to fill. Which is enough change to institute an attitude change.

Well, they're tied. It coulda been this year, but nope. Had to screw up everything. His win percentage will never be touched by another Bama coach, maybe no any coaches. But, from the other angle, he has already surpassed Bears Natty's in a way. He coached 24 years his 6. Saban only been there 15 yrs so far for his 6.

You may be right, but I disagree it is a quick turnaround once the lockerroom has soured...under the existing regime. Two years. That is a loooonnnnnggggg time in the SEC.

Not only did it in a shorter period of time, but did it in an era where you can't lose the last game of the year and still have a poll rank you #1.

The reality is, Bama has lost 2 games by a combined total of what, 4 points? They are not gone or done or anything in the long game. They're still an SEC power, and always dangerous. Im enjoying the fact that they're "down" this year. But I'm not going to say it is all over for them and they'll never be the same. They still get numerous players to the league every year, and they still are in the hunt for the CFP every year. As long as Saban is there, they will be fine.

Honestly, I hate Alabama, but when Bama, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, LSU and Tennessee are all good, it is just all around better for college football. I enjoy being part of the strongest conference in college football. It makes the good years even better. Being a part of the SEC is what makes me say that us being a 1 loss team still gives us a chance. No other conference gets that kind of mercy.

Saban has only played four meaningful games this year, and per the experts, he has been outcoached in all four.
