As an aside, several years ago I brought a colleague who was Chinese to dinner with my folks. Dutifully polite, he was mostly very quiet as we ate traditional BBQ outside.

He collared me privately and seriously asked, "What language was your Father's native tongue? I've never heard an accent like that."
