Sec stats...the numbers don't lie.

Defense isn't doing too bad from what I saw, hovering around #6-7 in most categories.

The one thing I saw that concerned me, was the fact that we have the fewest penalties, which is good, but those penalties go for big yards so we're high on the penalty yards list (#2).

If only we could've had last year's defense with this year's offense..

Another thing that stands out is penalties. The Vols only have a 34 yard average in penalties.

It's also interesting that UGA is #7 in rushing offense and Tennessee is #9, both averaging around 133 yards a game.

Georgia has the edge in rush defense, they're ranked #4 to our #8. UGA allows 100 to our 126.

It's nice that the Vols are #1 in 3rd down conversions too. The Vols couldn't buy a first down last year.

At some point during the Memphis game, the Vols were 8 for 10 on third down conversions. That's unreal.

one thing that stands out to me is the last place in kickoff returns. we need to improve in that area to help the offense with field position.

the stats that mean something to me:
Scoring offense...good.
turnover margin...bad.
pass efficiency...good.
rushing offense/defesne..bad.
total defense...not terrible...in fact..very average...
so far we have gotten 20 more 1st downs than our opponents...which goes to the offense on this one...w/out them that stat is the other way around.
Penalties...good.
red zone offense...good.
red zone defesne...bad.
3rd down conversions...offense, really good.(hidden stat here though: Only teams in the conf. with more 3rd dwon attempts than us are--Bama, SC, MSU and Ole Miss. that tells me something, and it ain't good--we are put in 3rd down too often).
Defense...still not too shabby at 39.4%, but not up to par with some of our opponents (another hidden stat...only teams to have less 3rd downs on Defesne than us: ARK, Bama, MSU and Bama...again, not real good...we're not putting our opponents in enough 3rd downs, and to boot, we aren't getting off the feild enough)

which goes to 1st downs...not real good for us on D. 80 1st downs allowed, and over 1/2 are rushing plays.

Time of possesion...needs to be better, and it could get better if we improve in the categories above.

and then the return game...it's not good and it shows.

bottom line is i see a team that has to out score it's opponent, cause we aren't going to just line up and stop you in most cases. And that's not a bad thing so long as it continues...especially the outscoring part, cause that's what matters anyway.:p

I don't know if there are any kind of awards for offensive coordinators at the end of the season, but Cutcliffe deserves one.

there's one for the top assistant..the Frank Broyles award, and if we keep winning, and the offense continues to look the way it has, he will be a finalist.
